After the time in Lisbon we headed off for Spain. This meant taking an intercity CP (Comboios de Portugal) electric locomotive-hauled train to Guarda. Even though a cross-border rail line exists, there is not currently any through passenger service so we traveled from Guarda to Valladolid-Campo Grande, Spain by coach.

1. The primary electric passenger locomotives are the 5600-class of Siemens design, built in cooperation with the Portuguese company Sorefame. Here one sits at the Santa Apolónia station in Lisbon. I feel that the paint scheme leaves something to be desired.

2. And here is my train to Guarda with three stainless steel carriages, two second class and one first class. This unit looks like it might have had a wrap at one time. I saw at least one other unit with a colorful wrap advertising an upcoming rail technology convention in Entrocamento.

5. From the rear of the train at the station stop in Entrocamento. There were some impressive lines of stored, old locomotives and passenger equipment in Entrocamento. Also the national railway museum.

6. Upon arrival in Guarda I took this shot showing some of the colors and lettering on two of the passenger cars.

7. My train upon arrival in Guarda. The station is relatively modern, not exactly attractive. The pristine tracks show evidence of recent maintenance and fresh ballast.

8. On this end of this side it is anyone's guess as to whose locomotive this is.

9. Ah, CP, there it is. The equivalent of a builder's plate showing that Krauss Maffei also got involved.
