Porthmadog was at one time a harbor for oceangoing ships to haul roofing slate that had been brought down from the quarries and mines.
The harbor is now used only for fishing boats and recreation.
There are three heritage railways in Porthmadog; the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is the shortest of the bunch (under 1 mile) and is closest to the mainline station.
It includes a stop at a museum building that explains the history of Porthmadog's narrow gauge railways.
