European Railroad Discussion > A few days in Edinburgh

Last week my partner and I spent a few days in Edinburgh at the Fringe Festival. We travelled by train (of course) and I spent a few hours on Tuesday and Wednesday morning doing a bit of railfanning.

1: Our journey from SE Wales to Edinburgh was relatively painless, leaving Abergavenny at 10:29, changing at Crewe, we arrived in Edinburgh at 16:32, 14 minutes late. I shot this picture whilst waiting at Crewe of a Lumo class 222 (right) arriving on the 1M01 Stirling to London Euston passing Avanti's 1D85 11:02 Euston to Chester (left) which was pulling out.
2: The following morning I was out on the Edinburgh Sub (Suburban Line) at Morningside for the 4S95 Tees Dock to Grangemouth intermodal.
3: Crossing Slateford Viaduct a Scotrail class 385 (units unique to Scotrail) on a Glasgow Central to Edinburgh via Shotts semi-fast.

4: With the old Caledonian Brewery on the right Transpennine Express class 397 on the 12:12 Edinburgh to Manchester Airport, shortly after leaving Haymarket.
5: The following morning I was back on the Edinburgh Sub for 4S95, here passing the old Drybrough Brewery in Craigmillar
6: From Edinburgh I caught a train out to Dalmerny at the south end of the Forth Railway Bridge, this is the Cross Country class 221 Voyager on the 1V60 08:20 Aberdeen to Plymouth, 694 miles in 11.5 hours with 33 stops. When you account for ther stops the running time is about 10 hours, still quite a marathon in a Voyager.

7: Scotrail still use HSTs on their domestic Inter7cities services, some are 2+4 others 2+5. They probably won't see out 2027 as Scotrail are intending to deploy former East Midlands class 222s next year to replace them. This is the 1A81 11:30 Edinburgh to Aberdeen, which takes 140 minutes for the 130 miles with six intermediate stops.
8: Edinburgh has a single tram line from the Airport to Leith (Newhaven) 11.5 miles. The fleet consists of 27 CAF Urbos most of which now wear advertising livery. I caught a train back to Edinburgh, getting off at Edinburgh Park the interchange with the tram and the site of the tram depot. This is a shot of the tram stop with the Edinburgh Park station beyond.

Great pictures!  Number two...the locomotive has DB...is that related to Deutsche Bahn?  Sure looks like their logo.

10: An Airport bound tram arriving at Edinburgh Park, it's in Edinburgh International Festival livery, presumably temporary until the festival ends at the end of the month.
11: One last tram shot, an inbound service arriving at Haymarket, the station about a mile west of Edinburgh Waverley where all trains stop
12: We left Edinburgh on Thursday 13th, which turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far further south in England. Our train was the 10:12 Transpennine Express to Manchester Piccadilly and the 14:30 Transport for Wales service from Manchester home to Abergavenny. Whilst we waited for our train to be cleaned I shot this Inter7cities set waiting to return empty to Haymarket depot for servicing.

Deutsch Bahn Cargo, one of our freight operators.

I like that angle on the Firth of Forth bridge in #6-7. Still one of the most remarkable bridges on the planet.

Love that #7 - an HST AND the Forth Bridge!  Classic. 

I never tire of Scotland, whatever the weather and midges throw at you. Great pics, Nick.  chris uk.
