On July 20 we took a day trip from Cardiff to Tenby. 
Trains stop at Swansea and Carmarthen along the way, which our both stub-end terminals.
Accordingly, one faces forward, then backward, then forward on different segments of this route.
The line from Cardiff to Swansea has relatively fast speeds, however beyond Swansea the line wanders through various towns along the route.
The trip out to Tenby went fine, however the return train was taken out of service at Carmarthen, requiring a transfer. The next train only went as far as Swansea, requiring another transfer to get back to Cardiff.
Train cancellations were disruptive, but each time they occurred we were able to take a later train to get where we needed to go.
1. Tenby station, where a new pedestrian overpass is being constructed.
2. Posters about temporary (construction) changes to train routes and frequencies. We did not travel on the impacted route.
3. A grade (level) crossing. Many, but not all, had gates across the entire roadway. I did see other crossings that just had a single gate blocking the direction of road travel, similar to the U.S.
