European Railroad Discussion > Passenger rail on CorsicaDate: 08/23/26 04:59 Passenger rail on Corsica Author: DocJohn Ajaccio, Corsica, is last stop on 14-day Mediterranean cruise (Explora 1) before finishing up in Rome. Never expected to find a railroad within walking distance of the ship. Station and train appeared to be relatively new. This is a narrow-gauge operation and apparently goes to Bastia on northern part of the island.

No tourists, but for the locals very important. Dispite the location in the Mediterranean Sea, there can be snow on the mountains (when we were there end of June, some peaks still were snow covered...). So, yes, they do have snow fighting equipment and provide an important link when the roads are closed...

Taken at Ponte Lecchia, the junction of the Calvi branch with the Bastia to Ajaccio mainline. On the left is a Renault ABH8 railcar on an Ajavccio to Calvi service, on the right is the connecting train to Calvi, a more modern X2000 railcar with a small Billard built trailer.
