On the SP - 12/31/81 (The Coast & Valley)

With the end of 2016 just around the corner here's a look back at trains departing west (north) from LA on 12/31/81.  I remember it well...traffic was slowing for the holidays then suddenly picked up just before Christmas and stayed busy for 4 weeks before the effects of the severe 1982 recession really started to kick in:

8330 West - LABRF - departed LATC 6:23am, conductor Burdette, engineer Kerschner, 68 loads, 1 empty, 3911 tons, 5664 feet (via Saugus)

8525 West - WCOAK - departed Taylor Yard 7:35am, conductor Williams, engineer Keyser (Gerry), 38 loads, 53 empties, 5765 tons, 5129 feet (via San Luis Obispo)

9243 West - LAEUY - departed Taylor Yard 7:50am, conductor Bunting, engineer Jenkins, 2 loads, 116 empties, 3644 tons, 7306 ft (via Saugus)

8317 West - LABAT - departed LATC 8:09am, conductor Lowrey, engineer Rasmussen, 31 loads, 1 empty, 2360 tons, 2925 ft (via San Luis Obispo)

9336 West - LABKY - departed Taylor Yard 10:10pm, conductor Rolls (D.H.), engineer Hellikson, 2 loads, 103 empties, 2857 tons, 4867 ft (via Saugus)

8323 West - AVBAT - departed Taylor Yard 10:20pm, conductor Kracht, engineer Adams, 60 loads, 1 empty, 4509 tons, 4478 ft (via San Luis Obispo)


Eastbound trains arriving Los Angeles:

7781 East - WJLAY - arrived Taylor Yard 12:55am, conductor McGowan, engineer Hull (Ernie), no other info except train had caboose SSW 80 (via SLO)

9049 East - BKLAY - arrived Taylor Yard 7:00am, conductor Morton, engineer Hellikson, 29 loads, 1 empty, 2925 tons, no footage listed (crew off duty 7:50am)

9363 East - GULAK - arrived Taylor Yard 12:25pm (LATE!!), conductor Finch, engineer Brand, 44 loads, 10 empties, 4137 tons, 3517 ft (via the Coast)

9349 East - OALAT - arrived LATC 3:00pm, conductor Johnson, engineer Nelson #1, 0 loads, 69 empties, 2346 tons, no footage listed (via SLO)

5319 East - BALAT - arrived LATC 6:25pm, conductor Varney, engineer Ware (Tom), 50 loads, 2 empties, 3668 tons, no footage listed (via SLO)

9236 East - OAASY - arrived Taylor Yard 6:50pm, conductor White, engineer Waage, 57 loads, 61 empties, 6770 tons, 7132 ft (via SLO)

AVBAT and LABAT arrived Oakland as one huge train X8323W at 315p 1-1
BALAT really got set down to arrive behind the OALAT

I'm guessing New Years Day being the next day had something to do with it.  1-1-82 was a Friday.
