I suspected back then that if it was cement it was from the facility at Rillito, AZ, west of Tucson.   It may have been test shipments.  Probably going to the same place the Mojave cement was going (Newark?).

Virlon, was that around the time (early 1982) when Jerry Waltman worked the local in Guad?  That's what I remember but maybe my memory is faulty...

Footage divides out to a little over 50 feet. Too long for cement cars.

Yes Allen, Jerry was our regular hoghead for quite a long time.

Maybe a unit grain train for Fat City in Soledad?

Cement for Vandenberg AFB?  Can't remember what time frame they were pouring the space shuttle landing strip.

If you look at Jan 17 the the 2LAWJY 17  looks like a similiar type if train all loads.  Could of been cement for the runway.  Engineer Bertran?   I bet it was Jim Benson instead//      Never heard of a Bertran on the coast..                                       SLOCONDR Wrote:

Brice Bertran was a Coast engineer.  His date was in the 70s. He fired for me a number of times.

This make quite a bit of sense.  I spent alot of time around around tracks the first several weeks of that January.  Work was slow and I was waiting for classes to start back up at Cuesta College.  I don't recall seeing any of these short, heavy trains in SLO or even Guadalupe.

Allen,
If thee were in fact cement hoppers for the runway projct, they would have been set out at Guadalupe. Then  the 5PM Lompoc hauler would take the loads to the plant and spot. We would spot the loads, pull the MT's and go on to Surf and Lompoc, then back to GSLP.

The runway at Vandenberg was already 12,000 feet long (thank you SAC!). They only had to extend it 3000 feet for the shuttle.
