Railroaders' Nostalgia > Beans (& brew?) in Los Angeles

A question for the nostalgic rails on this board; I’m thinking about putting a story together for a local site about LA County bars & restaurants that were especially popular with rails.

Was there a place on San Fernando Rd popular with the SP guys at Taylor or Mission Yards?

Was there a place popular with the Santa Fe guys near 8th St, etc?

1. Algemacs on San Fernando Rd below Brand Blvd was where some went for a sit down meal.  Algemacs was also where you went to look for a couple of officers on the night shift when you needed them and couldn't find them. 

2. The Foster's Freeze on Fletcher Dr. just West of the underpass served a whole lot of takeout meals to the switchmen, clerical and mechanical forces working in Taylor, at noon and 8pm.

3. The Atomic Cafe,  on the corner of 2nd St. (I believe) and Alameda, was where the yard crews working the street stopped to eat.

When working at the Shops I'd drive up to N. Broadway where there was a market that had a sandwich service, (of course I can't remember the name),
and get one to go; haven't found one better, still looking though.
If I was working the Bullring or Links it was an easy drive down to Phillipes; once we even took the engine down to Capitol Milling and parked it.
Yes, The Pantry was a popular spot if working around Butte St. or "J" yard and don't forget Van DeKamps at Fletcher and San Fernando Rd.

I used to hit Nicks whenever I had to go down to Taylor . Great littlel place. I can't remember the place at the PE building but it also had good food.

and their tag line 'Best Noodle in Town'.

When working or vanning to or from Hobart Yard, liked stopping in at Mikes Hockey Burger on Soto and Washington for a Hocky Burger (burger with hot dog).

Sadly, Mike's sold out in the last year or two and has been replaced with a 7-11, 'cause evidently you can't ever have enough damn 7-11's. 

or for the desk bound @ 610 S Main St, a quick trip downstairs -- Cole's...  food & beverages

It was not unusual to see a switcher parked on Alameda and First Street taking beans at the Atomic Cafe.
Sadly it was torn down for a new Metro station.
If you were stuck waiting for a new crew at Main Street, Lanza Brothers was and still is a great place to get a sandwich.
It is only a few blocks from Main and Albion.

In the 1960's, Conrad's was the night time place for Taylor Yard folks, at the corner of Fletcher and Riverside Drive.  I remember well ordering ham and eggs, with a thick slice of ham and three eggs, potatoes, toast and coffee, for $1.35.  Just leave the waitress a good tip.

In the 1970's the Santa Fe lodging facility in LA was the Clark Hotel on Pershing Square with a 24 hr greasy spoon called Googy's nearby. Nowadays this is all gentrified upscale territory. Back then, not so much.

Don't forget the world famous Phillipes on Alameda across from LAUPT and Naud Jct.

Your subject " Beans (& brew?)"  For brews, could be coffee or some Rule G?  For the latter, FOOTSIES on San Fernando Road was just over the big foot bridge leading to the Hump.  A lot a Trainmen "switch box cars" on those bar stools.

Footsies was next to the "C" Yard footbridge.  The hump footbridge was two blocks North on San Fernando Rd.
