Railroaders' Nostalgia > duck your head!

In pix #7 here-  https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,5092063  the guy looks like he’s having to duck to avoid bumping his head on the Krauss-Maffei's door.  Are there a lot of loco models with low doors like that?  Any models that stand out?<br /><br />

ALL locomotives doors are too small.

The worst diesel cab is GP30. Most of the ceiling is 6ft 6in above floor, with a higher portion next to windshield. A painful headbanger

Unless you're 5'-7" like me! There are times when it pays to be short.

He probably is ducking to get into the K-M cab. I have to when I work on the 9010 at Niles Canyon.

Or, 5' 4", like me ( 5' 7" is not short ), all doors, except the nose doors on F's, were no problem.

I am 6'2" and I have to watch my head on every door. The worst is trying to contort yourself into the nose door on EMD's to use the toilet.

Yep. 6'-1" here. Have to be careful on all cab doors. In addition to the GP30s, the U and C series GEs were terrible. Don't get me started on toilet compartments, especially the ones with the step inside the door. Gotta' be a contortionist or gymnast to take a leak. Getting out is even worse.

I'm 6' 5" and just shy of 300 lbs...and dislike conventionalcab dash 8 GEs the most.  Smaller doors, more cramped seating on the right side of the cab

Conventional cab Dash-8's. TERRIBLE to get into. Slow loading, stinking... Bleech. Hated those damn things.

I am a 6 foot.. the worst doors are the on the SD 60's..  A fellow engineer Diesel Dave used to wear a helmet because he hit his head once too many times on the doorways...

No one hasmentioned the nose compartments and doors of E and F units, especially when nose to nose.

I remember a couople of engineers out of North Platte who had issues with head room and also squeezing thru the doors on the early GE's.

okay, I'll bite!

Being an SP guy, it was always fun to fold yourself in half and back into the nose of the early SD45's to get to the toillet.
Being 5'9" it wasn't as bad for me, but those 6 foot plus conductors really had to pretzel themselves with the taller ones
really interesting to watch. The SD40's (8400's) were probably the same.

Ha. If Dave's nickname wasn't "Diesel", it could have been "Stretch" (put it with his last name). He's a tall dude, even by my 6+ foot standard. I'm sure that hardhat came in handy on just about every unit for him.

BTW, IIRC, he was on the committee that helped develop the cab layout with the desktop control stand for the first EMD "comfort cab" locomotives on the UP, the SD60Ms. I should ask him about it. He and Joyce retired to Oregon and built a house there.

Certain Uboats and their later dash 7 variants were pretty difficult.....we had a 500 pound engineer, who would position himself at the door, toss in his effects, and then you would put a boot on his arse and push him in......going out he kind of just oozed out...

I watched that process with a CNW conductor at B&OCT Western Ave tower in Chicago. It took both brakies to help him up the steps and shove him between the rail and the end of the car, and through the door. How he ever passed a biennial physical is beyond me.

I think it was in BN springfield that it was explained that they took the yardmaster tower out of service after they had to order a crane to remove a yardmaster after a heart attack.

I hear you Dag.  I'm 6'6", and ALL the doors on ALL the locomotives were too small.  IMHO, the worst, however, were the old "Covered wagon 'F'" units, and the GE U-Boats.  The center cab ALCo C415's were contenders too.

When you worked with Dick Brand did you flip a coin to determine which one of you would board the engine first ?
