The Rock In Chicago: Then & Now
Author: ATSF5669

Chicago was and remains one of my favorite railfan playgrounds!  In visits through the years, none specifically for rail photography, circumstances have on occasion permitted the opportunity to relive memories like these from the Rock.  On one of these adventures I dragged my beloved Phyllis to visit Roosevelt Road.  Not having had the foresight to visit this area through the magic of Google Earth, I was utterly unprepared and astounded at the changes that had taken place!  First challenge in even recognizing this location was a place to park, easily solved by taking advantage of the Target that now stands on land where these 1974 pics were just unoccupied urban wastelands.  Thank you Target; first for the free parking space and second for giving Mrs. P a place to shop while her husband made pics.  And yes I met your requirement to occupy a space in your parking garage by picking up a few snacks on the way to Roosevelt Road.  The pictures speak for themselves, all made at ground level or off the overpass.  Has this progress been a good or bad thing?  You be the judge.

To quote the TV character "Monk":
"I don't mind change. I just don't want to be around when it happens".

Outstanding 'then & now' stuff! It's surprising how fast stuff can change, and most of us still don't notice until it's too late...

I haven't been back there since I left in 1976.
Thanks for the comparisons.
Looks like they eliminated LaSalle Street building and built a new structure.

All nice pics. I do prefer the B&W showing the grit and maybe what some would consider filth.
