Merger
Author: retcsxcfm

On July 1,1967 the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard
Air Line merged.Needless to say all hell broke loose.
More details than I will refer to at this time.

I remember one little item that I thought was great.
All ACL pencils had erasers, the SAL ones did not.
One ACL guy asked an SAL guy no erasers.
"We don't make mistakes".
The ACL more or less took over.IE black disels
as an example. But our name was FIRST on
the name of the merger.

Uncle Joe
Seffner,Fl.

You know what side I am on.

Reminds me of the story I heard about UP and how they diligently preserved history in the 1980's and 1990's.

In 1981 Union Pacific merged with Western Pacific.  They took the "Union" from the UP name and the "Pacific" from the WP name and called the merged RR Union Pacific.

In 1982 Union Pacific merged with Missouri Pacific.  They took the "Union" from the UP name and the "Pacific" from the MP name and called the merged RR Union Pacific.

In 1996 Union Pacific merged with Southern Pacific.  They took the "Union" from the UP name and the "Pacific" from the SP name and called the merged RR Union Pacific.

Sarcasm does not translate well on the internets unless you give us a clue.

Or was that part of the joke too?

As long as there was one ACL employee and one SAL employee working there never was a merged rr to the SCL. All of the prior right trainmen were gone in the early 2000's, there was one engineer in Savannah who held out to 2014 or 15. He ha worked for both RRs. He was a machinist on the SAL, went to the old S&A(now NS) as a fireman, was cut off in the 282, and hired out on the ACL as a fireman. Somehow he still had his seniority date on the SALwhen he retired. I don't know how that happened, but that's what he told me.He was about 80 when he retired.

Actually in the final consolidation of the corporations, the SP name survived.  Immediately after all the i's were dotted and the t's crossed, the name was changed to Union Pacific.

Often in mergers companies will remain extant on paper until their various debts are settled in one way or another....then fully folded into the merged company...
