SP Coast Div. Engineer Photos now online
Author: hogheaded

Seven years ago on this forum I announced that I was working on the Ernie Kiesel Collection of Southern Pacific Photographs at History San Jose. It was more work than I expected.

So, after all this time, the 380+ photos are finally online at my website. They date circa 1900 - 1975 and focus primarily on Coast Division enginemen and their steeds. Officials and other employees also appear, as well as suitable-for-foaming shots of trains and historical events such as wrecks. I've also researched the service dates of known engineers in the photos, which appear in the Index of Names + Biographical Information.

Accompanying Kiesel is a three part 1984 (rescue) video shot on VHS of San Jose Car Department employees, plus a few Track Department employees, reputedly performing work at the depot, RIP track and yard. I remember the great majority of these guys, but can no longer place names with faces. Yellowjacket #4449 also makes an extended appearance.

Also, I have added several photos by Engineer Emeritus Greg Welker to his existing collection of circa 1980 Division 161 Garden Club banquet photos.

The above link will take you to all three.

Should you recognize or have biographical info on anyon, please let me know!

Just looked at your excellent website. You have been busy!

Recognized a few on that first video. Must see the other 2. Will send some names after I think on them for a couple of days.

What an incredible collection. Thank you for taking the time to digitize the prints and share them on your website.

Take Care,

I wish someone would do that for the Portland Division.

Agreed, it would be great if somebody had a collection of Portland Div. engineer photos...and the hundreds and hundreds of hours of available time needed to get them online.

In Part 1 of the Kiesel videos I spotted Glen Ransford, Bayshore Roundhouse Foreman. Either he worked at the San Jose roundhouse then or was there to see the SP 4449 in operation. Tall guy, dark hair, large mustache.

In Part 3, inside the San Jose yard office is Kathy Stout, red haired very nice lady who also worked at the Bayshore yard office and later at 515 Bay Street and at 1707 Wood Street in Oakland. She is seen hiding her face when the camera first spots her.

Now I can't remember Part 1 or 2, but also saw George Barosich, SP Police officer, walking in vicinity of the 4449.

Good to have you back on board Trainorders!

Thanks! This is a good start. I need to draw up a timeline to note at which point in the video a given peson appears.
