SP: Behind the Scenes with the SP4449 in 1981
Author: Westbound

Just west of the Diesel Shop at Oakland (CA), the 4449 very slowly backed and was eventually serviced for another special train. The locomotive coupled behind was the SP9324, which everyone ignored. No matter where this engine went, lots of cameras followed. Even railroaders (some with and some of us without a hardhat) found this to be an interesting event.

Look at all the white helmets. That much supervision for one engine

If memory serves, they managed to derail it.

I climbed all over #4449 that day, without a hardhat and have lived to tell the tale!
