You're only hosed for 12 hours.

Yard crew humor. This was the note left by the night yard job in Portland & Western's Albany yard. I don't remember the date or any details but it was prior to the paper mill in Newberg shutting down and the night crew must have had a rough night. Note the Westsider is running late since we came on at 0600 and it wasn't in yet and that there are few clear tracks. Also, with the south lead out, it is going to be a really difficult day. "You're only hosed for twelve."

For those of you questioning north vs. south lead, the south lead is basically the line to Lebanon, more-or-less unlimited length. The north lead had room for maybe 10 or 12 cars over the north pass track switch. Also, the south end of the yard was the high end, everything rolled nicely. North end, not so much as you're battling gravity and (sometimes) a prevailing headwind.

I alo don't remember the date although this must go back maybe 20 years ago as we were kicking cars (on the notes, whther the cars were bled off or not...old heads know what that means).  Also, the outbound westsider is in four tracks - oh that's gonna be fun quadrupling out of the yard.  "UP dispatcher, this is PNWR whoever, we need 40 minutes on the main for a crossover move..."

I'm glad I saved stuff like this.

Nice of them to leave a note. More often than not these days, the previous crew just leaves a mess for us to figure out.

Amen Trainjunkie!  I remember the days when crews looked out for each other around the clock.  I hope some still do.  Unfortunately sometimes no matter how hard you try they just dump too much on EVERY crew....

We took care of each other - most of the time - but the yard crews always left a note for the next shift.

There's the yardmaaster's turnover....which is more fiction than truthful (why doesn't the yardmaster know where anything is???).....then there's the notes between crews...more realistic about what's going on.
