This past weekend trip to Folkston, Ga.
Author: gg1tim

My wife and I made our third trip to Folkston this past weekend and spent Friday night just watching trains as it was too dark by the time we got there. On Saturday we took 32 trains between 7:30 am and 7:20 pm. First up on Saturday was the Autotrain with P42DC # 191 in the lead with B40-8W # 508 as the third unit which was a surprise.

Here is the going away picture of the B40-8W # 508. I wonder why it was on this train and where it was going.

Here is a SB freight led by C40-8 # 7581 at 10:06 am. Saw quite a few C40-8's this trip and I hope to see them run on the Bone Valley lines instead of the SD70M's as I always liked those big standard cab GE's..

Here is ES44DC # 5243 in primer SB at 4:31 pm with K651. The first few cars were mixed freight and the balance of the train was 40 or so Tropicana cars.

Wow, you caught a lot of good stuff! The KCS stuff was rare!! Anyone know why the ES44DC primer units have the 2 yellow arrow stripes on the front of the nose? Are they safety stripes or preperation for some new paint scheme???

Thanks,
Steve

I wish I knew the answer to that "2 yellow arrow stripes..." question. I've been wondering about that myself! Anyone have the answer?

I heard something about it being an FRA rule. Not sure if that's true.

Nice shots, that MPEX 5000 is way more rare han that KCS stuff, being as it is the ONLY unit of it's kind. It is called an SD50M-3, not a SD45R. MPEX stands for Motive Power Industries

I'm not to sure if it's a FRA rule or not, because the SD70ACe's that are being delivered to MRL and UP in primer do not have them. It may just be an extra precaution that CSX is taking(yeah right - lol)

Great shots. I saw quite a few of those same engines last week when I was in Folkston, including 7719, 5237 and 5223. Wish I could have seen those KCS units. I am looking forward to getting back down to Folkston in a few weeks.

That train with juice cars and pigflats was Q651 taking the juice cars back to Bradenton. A hot train, between Richmond and Florence at least.
