Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS OCS with new F Units at Harrisburg

The railfan gods were smiling on me at Noon today, when I ran into the eastbound Norfolk Southern OCS at Marysville, Pa. I'd run up to Harrisburg on speculation that I might find the train, and luckily ran smack dab into it on the south side of Marysville as it was heading for Rockville Bridge. A shot of it on the bridge follows, as well as one of it running along Harrisburg Yard on the east side of the Susquehanna. Including the power car, the train was 17 cars long. Two diners, Kentucky and General William Mahone, both former N&W revenue service veterans of the Pocahantas and Powhatan Arrow, were in the train.

You are right --- it is a very nice looking train.
I saw this morning some were pooh-poohing the paint job.
I think it's sharp.
Some people would open a suitcase of money they had just been given and complain the bills weren't new.

Very nice.

If the railfan gods are with me, this equipment will make its Kentucky Derby trip to Louisville in such a way that I can get some en-route pix. So how about Altoona-Pittsburgh-Bucyrus-Columbus-Cincinnati-Danville-Louisville, with the Bucyrus/Marion bit around 1100 on Monday 4/30, gang?

Hard to get used to no nose door and no hand rails on the nose.

I don't like how it looks from the front, but I can't think of many other Class I's operating F units, so I'll enjoy what we got!! That scheme actually looks good!!

Yeah, and the boxcar and Geep ruin it all. <G>

Don't they have enough confidence in their work not to have a back-up unit. <G>

What is the box car for? Golf Clubs? Or is it a stock car for horses? Tools? It's supposed to be a baggage car?<G>

What do you think the crews will nickname them? Covered stallions? F units? Ponies?

tomstp you nailed it on the nose. Missing door and handrails are the problem, couldn't pinpoint what didn't look right, at first I thought it was the recessed ditch lights. Overall engines and train look great together.

Like it! With this and what KCS is doing, I'm getting dizzy! Good stuff! Is that black or Brunswick green on the NS units? ;-)

Is this route remotely possible Patch, or were your thoughts tongue in cheek? that route would indeed be a winner for me!

That would be, to me, the most logical route for an Altoona-Louisville OCS/equipment move. Whether they'll actually do that depends on what other engagements they may have for the train. Me, I'd be even happier if they brought it up to Bellevue, but that would be 'out of the way' unless there were a specific reason to go there.

The most logical route would be Altoona-Harrisburg-Hagerstown-Roanoke-Bristol-Harimman Junction-Danville-Louisville.

Compare it to photos of MARC 81~85 ... NS 4270 looks great with her new round! pilot and behind-the-glass headlights. Kudos to NS & the shop forces that did the work!

Maybe the other A will be outshopped with it nose door?

I doubt it. There's no need for it (using them under motion isn't the safest thing), and there's too much of a chance of it being blasted inward if the train hits something at a crossing.

Here she be at Berryville, Virginia, as 203 runs around her. They look sharp!

I may be wrong,but didn't the Union Pacific get rid of the nose doors on their E units?

The UP eliminated the nose doors on their E Units. The FRA mandated that nose doors open outward like on the safety cabs. It is much easier to eliminate the doors
