Abandoned tunnel (PA) question
Author: cinder

There is a short tunnel through a ridge on the NS mainline between Tyrone and Huntingdon, PA just east of Spruce Creek. An aerial photo (Microsoft Virtual Earth) seems to indicate an abandoned alignment and tunnel just to the south. The "new" alignment required the construction of two additional bridges across the Little Juniata River. Notice the train in the lower right.

When was the alignment changed and why?

Conrail abandoned the southern tunnel and alignment in the mid-90s as a result of the double stack clearance project across PA. At the time each tunnel had a single track. Conrail opted to close the southern bore and heighten/widen the northern bore to accommodate both tracks.

Railpace had a good segment on this portion of the PRR (Contail) main when the two tunnels existed. I believe you can drive thru the discontinued tunnel; albiet unlawfully.

There's a presentation on Spruce Run in the Pennsy Triumph series, as well. I believe it was in book 1.

Getting through the ridge was a huge accomplishment.

Spruce Creek Tunnels....I've never railfanned in that particular neck of the woods, but have some railfan videos of the Middle Division that I bought several years ago with footage from the mid to late 80's of Conrail at those tunnels...Dave W.

There is a really neat old RR tunnel open to the public at the Poe Paddy State Forest Picnic Area not too far away. (Not to be confused with Poe Paddy State Park to the west). There is a foot bridge over Poe Creek preceding the tunnel. Very neat place. Aaron 20

If memory serves me correctly -- the section of the PRR between Alexandria, PA and Tyrone was one of the few areas that weren't 4-track mainline (due to clearances)... Anyhow, this segment through Spruce Creek is still one of my favorites, as well as CP Hunt to the east (where the old tower has been preserved).

Here is a photo from the west side of the tunnel(s). The current tunnel alignment is out of sight on the left. April 1991
