The names often have some relevance to the geographical locations and if you are new to a section of track you can have a better idea to locations than the mileposts.

The examples cited above are all on the Youngstown Line. Interestingly, when NS created new control points on the Toledo-Detroit line in Toledo early this decade, it used CP numbers at all three, then renamed one "CP-CRAVENS" shortly thereafter. I'd be so happy if they assigned names to the others, I'll even suggest here that CP-56 become CP-NEBRASKA and CP-54 become CP-DELAWARE. Both of those represent nearby city streets. While I'm at it, here are my thoughts for station names that could be applied to the Chicago Line between Berea (CP-194) and Kendallville, Indiana (CP-379). A couple of these I made up based on local landmarks or place names, but I'm sure the railroad could come up with their own ideas if they don't like mine. I'm not well enough qualified to remember others farther east or west to create a complete list: CP-194 - BEREA CP-197 - OLMSTED CP-203 - ROOT CP-207 - ELYRIA CP-212 - AMHERST CP-216 - FAIRLANE CP-219 - VERMILION CP-222 - BLUEBIRD CP-232 - HURON CP-234 - FIRELANDS CP-240 - SANDUSKY CP-242 - TOFT CP-244 - LAKESHORE CP-248 - BAY BRIDGE CP-253 - CLINT CP-256 - PORTAGE RIVER CP-267 - HARBOR CP-268 - ROCKY RIDGE CP-281 - MILLBURY CP-285 - VICKERS CP-286 - OAKDALE CP-MAUMEE - MAUMEE CP-287 - TOE CP-288 - LIDO CP-289 - SWAN CREEK CP-292 - NASBY CP-295 - HOLLAND CP-304 - WILKINS CP-307 - SWANTON CP-320 - WAUSEON CP-327 - ARCH CP-329 - BOLD CP-340 - BRY CP-342 - ANN CP-352 - EDGE CP-358 - BUTLER CP-360 - DE KALB CP-367 - WATERLOO CP-379 - KENDALL Not surprisingly, some of these reflect the names of towers that once controlled the locations in question. Others are my clever attempt to split place names in half to cover plant at two neighboring locations. Hey, Rudy, got all that? Date: 10/28/08 15:58 Re: NS Youngstown Line CP Names Author: esprrfan How about CP 288 becoming "Broadway" going back to when they had Broadway tower there.

I actually thought about that, but wasn't aware of that having been the tower name there. Date: 10/28/08 19:26 Re: NS Youngstown Line CP Names Author: dti407 toledopatch Wrote:

Any idea when the changeover will be in the Dearborn Division? Date: 10/29/08 08:57 Re: NS Youngstown Line CP Names Author: toledopatch dti407 Wrote:

Any > idea when the changeover will be in the Dearborn > Division? NS has been moving AWAY from using EAST, WEST, etc., in station names, apparently because they are prone to causing confusion. Otherwise, that's what I would have suggested. If NS has eliminated CP numbers on the Youngstown Line, it stands to reason that they'll do so on other lines in the future, but I can't predict when that might occur. Since most of NS's ex-Conrail territory is ex-Pennsy, it doesn't have as much of this as CSX does, but other lines not mentioned previously in this thread that are candidates for new CP names include the Marion Branch, the Dayton District, and the Mon Line. I imagine NS has a couple others that I can't think of. Date: 10/29/08 18:49 Re: NS Youngstown Line CP Names Author: JUTower The Mon Line did get new CP Names as well.
CP-2 is now ESPLEN CP-9 is BECK CP-16 is PERRY etc. I don't have the others handy at the moment. This is happening on a division by division basis. -Alex |
