New coal train on the Dayton District?
Author: P

Within the last week or two, I have seen a couple of coal trains go north out of Cincinnati and emptys return south. There is an empty right now sitting on the main waiting to get into Sharonville.

This is a rare event unless these moves have ALWAYS occured in the middle of the night. I have seen an occasional handful of loads on a regular manifest train, but not in a dedicated train like this. Is this in fact a new train? Does it have anything to do with the new coke facility in Middletown?

Dayton District is NS. This is the former CR line from Columbus, OH to Cincinnati, OH.

It passed behind Tower A Union Terminal Sunday about 2:30. One unit. Southbound. Empty.

The southbound empty train is a 79V with the northbound load counterpart being a 78V. Train runs down and hangs a turn to the west thru Louisville, KY.

My house is right on the Dayton Dist... and I've noticed in the last couple weeks... a couple coal loads going by... and then the returns being pulled by single engines... Mostly I've seen these trains at night, and only caught two during the day. Apart from the normal steal loads, freight, corn, cars, and once in awhile a tank or clown ... this has been a new trend.

I've heard these trains run as needed between Lynnville Mine, IN and Kenova WV. Train symbols are 78V & 79V as previously stated.

So up to Columbus and south to Portsmouth?

Seems odd to have coal trains originated elsewhere and terminated in WV
