who is responsible to qualify an engineer for a particular type engine for the road they work on, and how is power assigned thanks ed

anwer on first question woulf be Road foreman of engines.
if its standard design cab that the railroad uses, you are qualified on any similar cab.
power assignments are usualy done by equipment desk or Yard masters

Jaap is correct. The roadforman of Engines is responsible for seeing his employees are qualified on a territory. More times then not, they will put you with a trusted engineer to qualify you and then after normally 3 to 5 trips you ride with the RFE to qualify.

As for the different engines, well, I have never been qualified so to speak, when we first got the computers it was like "here they are now you figure it out" but we managed. Most engineers are smart enough to set down and understand what is going on.!
