Delaware Lackawanna derailment

Well once again the DL's 3642 involved in a major derailment on Bridge 60 at Steamtown, word has it a rail turned over. A little too much of a DL in house fix this time. Winters Rigging with "sidewinders" to the rescue! An interesting March 15Th. for OH WELL PRODUCTIONS.

3642 back on rails with minor damage to the pilot. All is well that ends well!
Is this Alco a Hoo Doo engine?

Wow.... that looks scary. On the bridge, no less.

I hope Steamtown doesn't fence the entire park up now.
"Everyone stay between the yellow lines!". Ugh.

Maybe it's time to replace the rest of the track vrs
just the yard leads.

I know someone who should be asking at the next round
of PA DOT grants.

looks like 130 lb joint bars on the rail ... that should be heavy enough for those big six axle units

But how old is the track? I'm saying since the Erie Lackawanna. Put that into your URL and watch the sway.

"How old is the Track"...rails, ties and roadbed in my mind make up the "track", is this what you are referring to?

Mainly the rail since it causes most derailments.

If the rail rolled out, that would lead me to believe it was poor tie conditions or lack of fasteners more so than bad rail.

If someone was riding in that unit. They may have soiled their shorts. That stuff is especially scary, when it happens on a bridge!

DL 3642 was built 4/1968 for Penn Central's heavy mineral trains. It weighs in at 420,000 lbs., similar in weight to a SD90MAC. Its huge.

Other than railfan's irrational dreams/fantasies- it makes no sense to have C-C power on this railroad. NYSW endured millions of dollars of losses using C-C power on their tired physical plant in the late 80s-90s. Poor business decision. Shippers get tired and tone-deaf to delays.

I find this statement amusing.

Rail does not cause derailments, it's what supports it (ballast, ties, plates, spikes/clips) or lack there of that does.

Main rail related cause of derailments are broken rail (and even that can be attributed to the support system of said rail.

Worn rail can cause derailments, at switches in particular. But a rolled rail is not the fault of the rail itself.
