Eastern Railroad Discussion > SD-45-2 headed west from AltoonaDate: 01/13/01 17:59 SD-45-2 headed west from Altoona Author: Rikko At 6:00 P.M. Jan.13 2001, Westbound preparing to leave Altoona at CP Works, with CSX # 8886 (considered a SD-40-2 by CSX, actually ex-CR # 6661, nee-EL SD-45-2) in the lead, NS # 4122 GP-38-AC highnose and UP # 9645 C44-9W.
Lead unit looks great in the Bright Future scheme ! I imagine this westbound rolled out of Altoona around 6:30 P.M. The 8886 was at Juniata during Railfest last year, some of us were lucky enough to spot it out past the paint shop near the 398 track, I noticed it had yellow hazard tape wrapped all around the front steps, identifying front-end damage. It's just now being released. Also spotted NS (Southern) GP-59 highnose in Southern colors, just outside the backshop door closest to 4th. Ave. I'll have a picture of CSX # 8886 posted here as soon as my FireWire card arrives. Happy Railfanning Rikko Date: 01/13/01 18:35 RE: SD-45-2 headed west from Altoona Author: BCM Unless Juniata just added it today, that NS GP59 in Southern (green) colors (NS #4610) is NOT a high-nosed unit. All of the GP59s and GP60s made (including NS!!!) have low short hoods...
- BCM Date: 01/13/01 19:43 RE: SD-45-2 headed west from Altoona Author: CRsmurf Well I see another one of the former EL SD45-2's has fallen to the CSX colors, Desacration I would say, I would say that if it was in NS colors also. The train you are talking about sounds like the M1A (Extra 11A) to me, Basically the old ATPI, Altoona to Pittsburgh/Conway. Also the Southern GP59 # 4610 was a low hood nose, when I caught on Thursday, on the 960 power move. Tony K, CRsmurf M.P. 273 NS Pittsburgh Line Conemaugh,Pa. North American Railfan http://trainweb.org/northamrailfan/ Date: 01/14/01 10:49 RE: SD-45-2 headed west from Altoona Author: Rikko Sorry about the "highnose" claim, I guess I had a senior moment.
The NS "Southern Green GP-59 is indeed a lownose. A thousand pardons... Rikko Date: 01/14/01 18:57 RE: #4610 nose Author: BCM ... of course the guys at Juniata could take one of the high noses that they cut off one of the new 5500 series units and add it to the #4610 to make a unit with even more Southern character...
