Stupid kids!
Author: m1bprr

Kids can be idiot's sometimes, here we see two kids climbing out of the way of NS train 458 southbound on the CP Sunbury subdivision Kingston, PA. The Bridge called the "Gauntlet" is about a quarter mile long across the Susquehanna river, these guys walked across the bridge after the train passed anyhow, I'm sure the crew had a heart stoppage momentarily.

Boy they were lucky this time...and they had a bike too....

Every time I see someone near the right of way.....I remind them of the danger and to expect a train, on any track, at any time, in any direction.......

Seems as though they may have come from the shallow end of the gene pool...

Why wouldnt they just have gone a few feet further to the overhang?

IIRC, this bridge has been posted in prior years, with one kid clinging to a bicycle while on the concrete.

I think if it were me, I would have voted for the pier. The overhang looks pretty small and you are very close to the train while hanging out there. The pier appears to be a safer spot.

BTW, We all (ok, most of us) have walked across railroad bridges in our lifetimes, so I wonder if that makes anyone who ever has done it from the low end of the gene pool? I will say that even as a youth, I could discern whether a particular bridge was on a high speed main or a low speed branch and would never have walked on anything where there wasn't a quick escape.

As P suggested, I have walked across railroad bridges before. Never had the train come across while I was on one but did have one come across not long after one time. At least these kids were paying enough attention and had the sense to get out of the way unlike so many stories we hear here about the idiots that walk around with earbuds or headphones oblivious to the World or the ones who simply stand on the track and expect that the train will stop in time when it sees them. Bad choice on walking across the bridge but at least these two reacted in time and with probably the best option that was available within quick thinking and easy reach. I'm sure something like "that was close" was said. Perhaps next time they will find a different route or at least use better planning. No, I am not approving trespassing...

Certainly not fun to see this from the cab. I saw two kids run and then huddle on top of each other on one of those bumpout platforms on a bridge across a deep ravine on Vancouver Island. Even though we got the Sperry car slowed down before we got to them I quite sure that we literally scared the p**s out of them. Frightening to think what someone will do in panic mode, especially on a bridge where jumping off may not be a good idea either.

NS management, some of whom may view this website, may also have
momentary heart stoppage after looking at these images (along with the
corporate attorneys).

I'm a mother and it made my heart stop, but you're correct about NS Management, most of its employees and definitely the attorneys. I'm proud to say I never have and never will trespass, nor have my kids, they know it's wrong and understand that a train can't just stop. Thankfully these little guys were ok and no train crew had to witness anything horrendous. I think sometimes they just don't understand how dangerous it can be.

Well, at least they've got a story to tell their buddies now.
I did crazy stuff like this when I was a kid. Fortunately I always had a healthy dose of fear hanging over me, like these kids probably did.

There's a bike in this one too, and another kid on the ground at the lower right of the first shot.

IF that NS train stopped right on the bridge, it would "trap" those kids on that pier until the cops got there!
