Runaway Miles Question
Author: CSX106CL

With full tanks how many miles could
#8888 have gone towing 46 cars before
running out of fuel?
Could it have made it to the East coast?

Fuel consumption depends on many factors, terrain as well as train!
A ROUGH figure I once heard on SP was six gallons of diesel per mile (and this may have been a 20 cylinder "guzzler.") So, with a FULL tank of 3000 gallons, at six gallons per mile, you could go 500 miles before running out of fuel (depending on load, grade, etc.) Again, just a rough estimate... each situation is different.

Cops shot at the fuel tank

In ABC news footage, a cop with a rifle shot at the tank in an effort to drain it. He's lucky it didn't deflect straight back.

What????? Why wouldn't the environmentalists go nuts about that? Dumping fuel on the ground as it travelled along? I understand the reasoning here, but those guys don't seem to understand much that involves "common sense."
