Eastern Railroad Discussion > TOTE BoatsDate: 11/22/12 04:48 TOTE Boats Author: CGTower A carry over term from the L&N I believe. Gone are the days when pig trains would get solid lash-ups of GE 4 axle power. Now all we see is wide cabs.
But not on this day in the early 1990's as we stand trackside at Deshler, Ohio...long before the Conrail split and the renewal of the Garrett and Willard Subdivisions, we see morning eastbound pig train taking Deshler by storm. Happy Thanksgiving... CG Tower Date: 11/22/12 04:56 Re: TOTE Boats Author: jmbreitigan Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.
John Date: 11/22/12 06:18 Re: TOTE Boats Author: mikecollins Ah, the 5800s...remember when they were new. Sure looked sharp in fresh Seaboard System livery on the old L&N. How many are left on the roster?
Date: 11/22/12 08:01 Re: TOTE Boats Author: MSchwiebert Made for some great scanner conversations back in the day when the B&O guys had their GP40'2's taken away and replaced by the U33/36B's & B36-7's, needless to say they weren't pleased... Ineresting to think that back then 4 pig trains a day was it on the B&O

Date: 11/22/12 08:07 Re: TOTE Boats Author: gborgwald Nice picture from one of my favorite places. Where exactly were you standing? It looks like it might be in the southeast quadrant of the diamond, but you say it's an eastbound.
And Happy Thanksgiving to you. Greg Date: 11/22/12 08:22 Re: TOTE Boats Author: MSchwiebert Southwest quadrant of the diamond.

How many are left on the roster? I think they are gone. I know there are no 5800's anymore. They had some 5900's, that were converted to 2000hp, for, I assume, yard work. How many are left on the roster? None remain on the CSX roster, the last B36-7's having been retired a few years ago. The B40-8's, many of which have been derated to 2000hp and reclassed as B20-8, are the only 4 axle GE's left on CSX. Bryan Jones Brooks, KY Bryan's Train Photos Edited 1 time(s). I heard it the first time when Seaboard System started an Atlanta-Savannah pig train on the old Georgia Railroad. As stated in the original post, it always ran with U36B's until the B36-7's arrived in 1985.
In regards to the B&O guys mourning the "loss" of their GP40-2's, much the same was heard down here on the SBD side. I specifically remember venomous ruminations such as "they took all of our GP40's and sent us their GE's". Love 'em or hate 'em, those B36's really did haul arse. I miss them. Thanks to the OP for this thread. |
