Heads up ... NS Big MACs headed east in PA ...
Author: bioyans

Have gotten word that 64J is headed east today with a pair of SD80MAC's, destined for NJ. 7205 and 7206 departed Conway this morning, and are one of two sets of SD80's to be assigned to the 64J/65J trash trains (the other set is supposedly 7203 and 7214).

Unless something drastic happens, they should be headed to Harrisburg this afternoon and on to NJ later tonight ...

It's a shame what those beasts have been relegated to hauling, but I can't complain, at least they are still rolling and haven't been ECO'ed yet.

Last time I was down there, there were dash 9's in the mix, as well as sd60's and sd70's. I have a picture of an sd60, an sd70 and an sd80mac all together in one consist. I think the days of solid 80mac consists are over.

Most (or all) of them have been in storage until the past few days.

Not most...there are only 5 of these in storage (Downturn in coal traffic is the reason). The other ones that are currently active never were in storage.

Thanks for the correction, my sources had led me to believe that they had all been stored.

In either case, four of them have supposedly been assigned to captive service on 64J/65J.

Had a text from a friend in Altoona who reported the 64J leaving there around 1pm, and I just heard it call signals just West of CP CANNON. Should be on the fuel pad in Harrisburg around 4:30pm.

It is nice to see these beasts still roaming the rails hauling freight.

CSX has only two MACs active, all others are stored. 4590 is headed for Richmond/Newport News VA area today leading a train and 4591 arrived in Baltimore yesterday morning leading Q276.

Only 4590 and 4591 are active, 4600 for a while was but is now in storage at Waycross, GA.

The last time 3 CSX SD80MACs were together was May 15th, 2012 on the Popes Creek Subdivision (one of two subs in the whole CSX system that allow 3 online AC motors - 27 powered axles). Here are three pics from that day: (4600 - 4591 - 4590)

1) CSXT 4600 after I politely asked the crew to turn the markers on.
2) Blasting off for Amtrak's NEC and eventually Benning Yard.
3) Going away towards Benning at Seabrook, MD on the NEC.

4591 was shopped and was the middle of the 3 pack of MACs, luckily they put 4590 and 4600 together. This was their last Popes Creek run before being shipped off to Brunswick and Cumberland, separated. I am pretty sure this is the last time two CSX MACs have been together. JUNE 1ST, 2012

1) Crossing Croom Road Northbound on the Popes Creek Sub
2) Crossing Rt 214 on the Popes Creek Sub
