While out picture taking this morning, I ran across this incident where a 13'6" trailer tried to clear a 13' underpass. This is Diamond St Ravenna, OH where it passes below the NS Cleveland Line. Track inspectors found no track damage, but put a 10 mph speed restriction until the semi was removed. You can see by marks on the bridge, it has beeen hit before.

Yea, I'd say that the clearance on that one is about 13'5"...

One more reason to ship that trailer by train! Was it worth it for that driver to get "thrown under the truck" because of that extra 9 inches?

Interesting how there is no height markings on either side of the bridge...Isn't that information supposed to be posted in visibility of the truck driver? Out here in California every damn bridge I've seen has the max height in reflective letters across it.

first of all trucks are 13'6".Second low bridges are listed in the front of the Rand McNaly rtucker atias,proper trip planning would have avoided the accident if you can read english.Mike

FRA requires ten mph till a bridge inspector can look at it and determines its safe for timetable speed.

Not true, the one pictured is now just a hair over 13'

I wouldn't be so sure that this road is even a truck route. And if it isn't, then it might not have the clearance signs that would be put up on a truck route.

I doubt the explanation for how this happened will get out very far beyond local coverage, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if use of a GPS device was involved.

When I was in college I drove for moving co both straights on tractors in Northern NJ. Our straights were 12'6" and trailers were as high as 13'6". Point is most bridges were marked, but if they weren't and I had any doubt whatsoever I found another way. Most otr guys were always concerned about low bridges and high rr crossings. Mind you this is long before GPS talking 86-89 time frame. Also sometimes these roads are marked with signs when you turn off the main road at least in NJ some are. Thats a bummer for that driver he'll pay decently.

Not true.

If you google the locations of Diamond st and Mill St, and Diamond and W Lake St, you will see that it warns of the 10'9" bridge ahead.

I think what he was criticizing was the absence of any sign on the bridge itself.

Or at least a complete open top trailer!

Near the Port of Albany, NY there was a bridge marked 12'6" and trailers 13'6" cleared it with room to spare - but is sure shook up a driver when he came upon it as a stranger. I was creeping up to it to check it out in a heavy snow storm, and a unit with a high capacity container came flying thru from the opposite direction.

I just dont understand how this keeps happening over and over again,Our Motor Coach is 13 feet 2 inches tall to top of the A/C unit,If i drop the air bags it will give me 2 more inches,We drive this thing everywhere if the Sign says 12 feet 9 inches we have to turn arround,I also look to see if the road was repaved,And then i put on the flasher climb on top and LOOK.Most standard trucks are 13/6 tall and most bridges are marked if you can read English!!!
