Possibly somewhere in WV or southwest PA? (I'm assuming by your name you're in the Pittsburgh area)

Bravo. Didn't take long at all. I was passing through town and was surprised to see a train pulled this far north...I'd imagine the remaining track doesn't go much further than this. Is it normal to park trains here? I'd assume this was something to be interchanged with W&LE?

I don't know much about Benwood, but I do know that the train is given to the W&LE and is taken to the Nelms 2 mine in Miller Station, Ohio, which is between Jewett and Mingo Jct on the OHCR. The CSX and W&LE power normally stays with the train all the way to Miller Station.

Correct, what you got was basically a "head room" track out of the Benwood Yard. It used to go all the way up through the City of Wheeling including street running over 17th Street and then eventually to Washington, PA.

Matt beat me to the answer on this one, congratulations Matt. I'm pretty sure the coal on this train from Nelms 2 goes to Parkersburg and then back over the Ohio River up through Marietta to a power plant northwest of Marietta. Several direction reversals involved between Mingo and the mine.

Thanks Dale: Just curious, do they still use the balloon track at Benwood at all? It looks to me like its still in place. Would have been neat to watch trains coming off the W&P use it to reach the bridge back in the day..

I don't know. Since traffic comes from the south onto the bridge and goes the opposite from the bridge it's hard to tell. It's mainly a handoff at Benwood between WLE & CSX although CSX does have some limited operation in the yard itself. Earlier this year when I was down there I spotted a number of Winchester & Western hoppers in the yard.

So, I really don't know.

Dale
