UP 1995 CNW Interchanged to NS

UP 1995 showing interchanged to NS in Memphis, Tennessee. Anyone have any info on where this is heading? I have some time off and would like to catch it if coming into the Alabama, Georgia area. Any info would be great!

Probably put on a 432, or maybe a 114, or 96Q, or a.... GOD, I hate the NS train numbering "system!!!"

Wow, really? That was totally called for and related to this topic. In what way do you "deal" with railroads so as to need to decipher a symbol? I understand them just fine. Never let a little research get in the way of a hateful attitude.

Maybe they'll put it on 22N which has UP power every now & then.

Whether you understand NS symbols or not, it's a pretty stupid system with little rhyme nor reason to it.

Its only as hard as people make it, and it makes perfect sense to those who understand it...

There is a reason for it if you'd just open your mind. You can call your trains whatever you want when you get your own railroad. Until then, a 51Q pays exactly the same as a G-ALBELK or whatever.

Ok well then...

About the CNW Heritage, which route is it heading from Memphis if it is on NS rails? Any info?

The reason was the NS computer system could not handle more than a 3 aplha/numeric combination code for train I.D.s when they took over Conrail.

The fact that many of you have to use it and thus memorize the million little nuances of it doesn't make it a good system. The symbols tell you nothing about the origin or destination of a train, some symbols (grain trains are one that I can think of) may have multiple possible destinations for the same symbol, and some trains like 323 run the same symbol in both directions. I can learn and memeorize where train 121 goes, but I can't derive anything from the symbol other than it is some type of manifest freight, and it MIGHT be a westbound.

That's exactly it. It works for those that use it and for NS as a whole. I don't understand why some people have to get so hung up on something that affects them little to none. How bout CSX G852, does that mean anything to you? How bout CP 379? Nope? Why is NS so much worse? Here's my suggestion: You can hire out and go on Wick's Page and tell him how much the symbols suck; Become a stockholder of monumental amounts and petition that they change the symbol system; OR you can just not fan NS since it confuses you so much.

Back to the original topic before it was so rudely interrupted, UP 1995 is on a high and wide for Anniston, AL.

Thank you, that helps in decision making for the day.

I dunno - I don't find NS any more confusing than an M-ABCDEFGH-I-21 or most of those western alphabets, but if I followed UP or BNSF I'd know those instead. And maybe that's why CSX and NS can call signals, quick to say "37q clear 14.1" or "q370-10 approach Rocks", can't imagine having to say a multitude of letters every two miles...

And, I actually think CR had the easiest symbols, not too long but was obvious origin-destination.

UP and BNSF typically do NOT say the train symbol while reporting signal indications... they use the lead engine number and direction of travel... such as UP 4263 West.... or BNSF 9854 South and so on... Conrail never did either in the area I grew up in. They only called out the CP number/ID direction of travel and indication...

I don't ever remember Conrail requiring employees to call signals on the radio.

Silly easterners. ZLACWSP pays lots more than the MBARTUL. It usually gets called off a long pool and the drag doesn't.
