It's been almost two years to the day that I went to Memphis for the first time. After some bad luck at railfanning and map reading, I was ready to keep heading west. Just over the river on I-40, I looked to my right and saw a train. I took the first exit, backtracked and this is what I found:

A BNSF train with Candaian National SD75I and Santa Fe blonde was stopped on the main with a broken knuckler. I stopped a few miles down the track and waited.

The next day, after a night's sleep at the Ramada Inn in W. Memphis, I caught this train in Turrell, Ark. It was the first time and last time seeing a Kodachrome in person.

Then it was to Kentucky Street where H1 #1101 was leading a pig train out of Memphis.

Next up, I found my way to the Norfolk Southern yard and caught an east bound train led by a Union Pacific SD40-2. Out of six units on this train, only one is NS black.

Thanks for bringing back some memories. I was in Memphis in 1991. I saw a lot more Illinois Central back then. Memphis was the first place I ever saw a stack train. I look forward to any photos taken in Memphis.

Most of my good Memphis shots come later in the year. But here is one final shot from late summer 1999.... a four unit train coming through Harvard complete with red and silver B unit.

Later in the year, I was living there and getting better shots in my opinion.

The number on that CN unit looks like 5604. If so, that would make it an SD70I, which is a rare catch in itself as there were only 26 ever built, CN 5600-5625.
