Eastern Railroad Discussion > CP SD40-2 QuestionsDate: 11/23/02 21:22 CP SD40-2 Questions Author: CR70MAC Got 2 questions:
1. How many SD40-2's were converted to "B" units, with the removal of controls and blanked cab windows? Which numbers are these? 2. Which SD40-2's are used as Mother units for slugs and hump yards? Which numbers are these? Thanks! -Scott, Philly PA Date: 11/24/02 00:39 Re: CP SD40-2 Questions Author: stuart according to web site http://www.trainweb.org/galt-stn/cproster/locomotive/5400s/3200.htm
Units 3244-3254 were leased from GATX in 1991 arriving in solid black paint with NS markings painted over. They were purchased in June 1992 having white "CP Rail" decals applied, and were renumbered beginning in 1993 into the 5475-5485 series (out of order). All retain their as-built high short hoods and have their cabs blanked over. as for hump units i do not know i have only seen 2 of the b units in my life.....at Smith Falls Ontario http://showcase.netins.net/web/trains/cpunits/slides/5476.jpg http://showcase.netins.net/web/trains/cpunits/slides/3254.jpg stuart in iowa learning more and more everyday as i look for answers . Lousy lease terms?
Date: 11/24/02 07:02 Re: CP SD40-2 Questions Author: BrianM I believe all but 2 of those ex-NS units made it into B units. 2 of them kept their controls.

All of the "B units" whether thre former NS units and or the CP's retained their control stands. What was not maintined were any feature that would allow the units to lead, which include such things as event recorders, fridgs, rsc's etc. Futher, the NS units where never set up to lead while on CP. Toronto yard currently has a number of remote control hump sets that include a remote receiving unit plus two of the fromer NS units. If I recall correcly the remote receiving units are former SOO fuel tenders. I don't know exactly which numbers are still roaming the system, but I've seen 3 B units this year: 5704, 5762, and 6057. According to my up-to-date 1996 Trackside Guide, numbers 5702-5715, 5758-5772, and 6055-6080 had their cabs stripped and windows blanked out. I'm almost certain that some of them have had their cabs upgraded and are no longer B units. Anyway, here is # 6057 at Smiths Falls, Ontario in August of this year.
Hope this helps. Date: 11/24/02 14:01 Re: CP SD40-2 Questions Author: Harron At least two of these units went to Alstom (5483, 5484) from the CP, were rebuilt, and now roam the CSX as FURX 3049, 3048 respectively. They have been rebuilt with chop noses. IIRC, some of them have received red paint.

My 1st question about the converted SD40-2's was directed to CP's own units, and not the NS high nose units. I have seen SD40-2's in the 5700 and 6000 series with blanked windows, but the numbers were scattered about, so I was asking which units particular had the blanked windows. The ex-NS SD40-2's I knew about being B units, and the Hump mothers. AFAIK, there aren't any CP SD40-2's (#5560-6080) as mother units, correct? -Scott, Philly PA Date: 11/25/02 05:05 Re: CP SD40-2 Questions Author: RR_Auer Original conversions to 'B' status were
5702-5715, 5758-5772 and 6055-6080 (all equipped with Locotrol II}. Some since returned to leader status. No SD40-2's mated to 'slugs' however 6043, 5590 and 5592 are mated to 'control cabs' 1100, 1103 and 1104. Also, 5476-5481 work in pairs with radio controlled 'hump braking units' 1150, 1151 or 1152 in between. Finally, some SD40-2's are mated to radio controlled GP9u's but don't know which. I remember seeing at least one when it was still black with a note on the cab window that said "Do not occupy cab" |
