A trip to see Kinzua (Info)
Author: Rikko

I\'m planning a trip to Mt. Jewett to catch a glimpse of the tragic bridge collapse,
can anyone suggest good viewing locations without being in the way or trespassing,
I\'ve only been there once and it was by train.

Thanks in advance.

We went up the day after the collapse and were not allowed into the main entrance of the state park. Some people were parking on some of the access roads and walking the Knox and Kane to the bridge, but the police were going into the park and chasing people out.

People from an engineering firm out of Harrisburg were crawling all over it today. They have already erected chan link fences with the "airbourne sidewings" to keep people off the bridge and from squeezing around the fence.

All 9 of the surviving towers had been reinforced by the contractor. All un-reinforced towers fell, as well as one reinforced tower. The one reinforced tower which did fall was described as "intact". Offically, word out of State College was that it was a F-1 tornado which brought the bridge down.

Apparently the guard rails which lie between the guage of the active rails, and which began 35 feet off of the bridge, were pulled completely off the entire bridge. Talk about rails "cracking like a whip".

Before you go take a look at the bradford Era\'s web site. they claim that the park will re-open the first week of August.
