CSXT GP39 status
Author: CRGXFieldman

How many of the CSXT GP39\'s 4280-4299 (ex-C&O 3900-3919) are still around these days. The last time I saw one in person was over Sand Patch in June 2000.Are they only used in yard service with the low hood slugs?

Out of 4280-4299: 4281, 4284, 4292 and 4296 are retired. I do believe they are used mostly in yard service as all but three of the remaining 16 have yard mates. 4291, 4294 and 4299 are the ones that have no mates. Several GP39s are also equiped with remote control equipment.

The ex D&H nee Reading GP39-2s in the 4300-4319 series are all alive and kicking right here in South Florida (Miami, Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach) and are used in both switching and local service. They can also pinch hit in road service. They could all use a new paint job as they look really worn.

Though I can\'t profess to having seen one recently, there has usually been a GP39 or two, mated with a 10xx-series slug, working at Stanley and/or Walbridge yards near Toledo since the merger. They may have been displaced, however, by the RC drone/SD40-2 pairs, which seem to be doing the work the GP39/slug sets used to do.

2 of them have been repainted in the YN3 scheme.
Actually, I liked the D&H gray and yellow scheme
that 4309, 4311, 4313 and 4318 wore.

I saw the following in Russell on 7/19:

4283 w/ 1021
4280 w/ slug (couldn\'t see the #)

4283 had been modified for RC operations with the compartment added to the front of the low nose.

Yes... I was in Russell, KY back in late March and I saw 4 there. 3 were working with slugs in the yard, a fourth was in the shop area and looked dead.

Powell Wye mentioned the 4283 -- I had forgotten that my first cab ride was in this unit. Brought back a few memories. Glad to hear that most of this rare class is still around. I\'m thinking that there were only like 23 built -- 20 for C&O and the rest for Kennecott Copper. Thanks for all of the responses.

Still get them on the q352 and q353 once in a while shuttling into Cumberland for shop work. Had 4290 as leader leaving Cumberland earlier this summer. Unfortunatly it was dark by the time we got out of the yard. Also had the 4285 in q352\'s consist this summer. CSX already butchered the nose on it to install the remote equipment. Both of them were still working as EMD intended.

The original GP39\'s went to C&O, 1 to Atlanta and
St Andrews Bay, and the other 2 (which were actually
GP39DC\'s) to Kennecott. C&O got the only ones with
dynamic brakes. I think a couple of the C&O units
have been sold second hand, but I don\'t know who
got them.

The KCC GP39\'s had dynamic brakes too. The ASAB unit now works for PAL.

I tried to find some pics online of the KCC GP39\'s,
but couldn\'t locate any.
