Eastern Railroad Discussion > Reading and Northern at West HazletonDate: 01/06/17 19:24 Reading and Northern at West Hazleton Author: sscannella Caught the West Hazleton Fast Freight (WHFF) getting ready to depart the Humbolt Industrial Park in West Hazleton this afternoon. A pair of the Reading and Northern's SD40 units were in charge of 17 cars switched during the day by the Industrial Park local, departing as they usually do just after 4:00 pm. This move starts with a shove towards Oneida Jct in Hazleton before pulling south towards Tamaqua, Port Clinton, and eventually North Reading. Because of the shove move, the job uses a shoving platform, (or caboose) for the first part of the move. As is normal practice, the job actually starts with a pull by the small yard office to allow the conductor to board the caboose, before starting the several mile shove.

Yes I love that caboose as it may be used for reverse moves; but it looks like it is taken care of, not ratty looking like many other railroad cabooses today. Thanks for sharing your photos. Not every railroad has the money available to do that.

If I recall they recently supported a law that passed in PA regarding railroad vandalism very publicly.
