REALLY in need of a paint job.
Author: ddavies

NS 2539 leading 777 northbound at Shenandoah Junction, WV.  The leader should stop at Altoona on the way back to the mines and get a paint job.  ;-)

Easily the roughest-looking NS locomotive I've ever seen, although some of the older C40-8s would give it a run for that dishonor.

Now that the C40-8s are almost all off the roster and inactive, SD70 2539 just might be roughest looking active locomotive on the roster.

This is a joke, but maybe this should be put on HU for the roughest looking NS special interest. Just a joke though.

Back in February, NS retired all 56 Dash 8-40C units that were still on the roster.  They sold 44 of them to LTE Rail Services (LTEX) and 12 were sold to Progress Rail.

I caught two C40-8 units rolling westbound DIT last week along with PR43 #133 in the same lashup. Norfolk Southern at Leetsdale, PA.

The pair (8302 and 8721) were retired units being shipped to LTEX.

Wow, that just begs to be modeled...my Athearn Genesis NS SD70 is on the way from Caboose- any chance I could impose on you for full size and any additional photos of the 2539 so I can use them to "paint up" my new SD70?

Sure will get comments when run...but it will be prototypical!

Thanks,

I was going to throw in 'roughest-looking on any roster' .............. but then, I got to remembering some of the CP locomotives I've seen and decided against it.

Yea, I was only joking. No it would be dumb to add this to heritage units. I just meant it as a joke.

Reminds me of some of the SP Tunnel Motors that were around years ago. Looked like a skin disease on them, just as it does on this one.  Ben

As grim as this looks, I'd rather see this than something with graffiti crap all over it.
