What makes you so sure they'll be cut up?

Looked like a new cab and a bunch of sheet metal will get 4001 on the road? 1036 not as bad.

Sounds all well and good as far as the cosmetics; what about any potential mechanical damage, to the frame, prime mover, etc? I'd have to think there could be a lot more to that damage than just sheet metal.

I'm sure they'll do a mechanical analysis before they decide what to do with these units. I doubt that the frames were bent.

They will most likely set at juniata for awhile until ns decides on what to do

The 4001 looked like cosmetic damage, and 1036 didnt seem to look that bad.  TMS rebuile NS 8311 after it took a plunge into a creek, so yea they can rebuild worse than this easily if that.

Does the prime mover have some sort of engine shutdown system when the locomotive rolls over, such as in this case?  Maybe a low oil pressure sensor?  If not, could have the engines kept running in a less than optimum position?

Would like to think that they weren't running at that point, but, there was one picture early on that showed the ditch lights still on.

I can say with 100% certainty that GE's will continue to run, even if they have thrown their pistons out the doors, and shredded the crankshaft and flywheel.  It happened to me a few years ago with a CSX Dash-8.
Now, as for these two units, I'm sure the d/r happened so fast that the crew barely had time to react, let alone hit the "stop" button on the bulkhead over the control stand...I know I'd be hitting the deck and holding on at that point...
I'm so grateful that the FRA mandates these new stronger cab protection posts.  So many more railroaders have been able to walk away from serious wrecks that if they were in an older standard cab they'd have had serious, or fatal, injuries from...

Neither of those units will die from that.

I am almost certain those two units will be rebuilt.

As an earlier post alluded, the main thing is that the cabs did their job and the crew survived relatively unscathed. My £ is on these unit's being returned to traffic.3 days ago I saw the 9940 in Birmingham AL,that had been more or less demolished after a wreck caused by a washout a few years back.

Is there any info regarding the speed of the
train at the point of derailment? Also, did
crew see the track defect (reported kink)in advance,
enabling them to slow before the derailment.

Thanks for that comment.

Do NS or CSX etc recommend that newer safer cabs lead, even what that means shuffling power? I only occasionally see an older cab leading a newer one, comparing to the number of times I see a newer cab loco leading an older one.
