Were either/both of Sand Patch Tunnel's two ventilation shafts ever sealed, after dieselization came along?

No, the biggest one can be seen very easily from RT 160 in the fall, and when the angle of the sun is right daylight shines through, smoke can still be quite bad if you have a cluster of trains close together.

Smoke? What exactly causes it? I would think that the big issue would be diesel fuel fumes being emitted from the shaft. In any case, it sounds like the shaft is still serving its purpose.

I have seen the shaft, in parson, and also wondered how deep you have to go from the top of the stack to reach the top liner of the tunnel portal itself.

Smoke is caused by incomplete combustion, when one of the three sides of the fire triangle are diminished, in this case air
