CSX: Hunter puts his money where his mouth is...
Author: Lackawanna484

CSX CEO E Hunter Harrison bought $15mn of CSX stock at a price of $50.50, according to several sources. And has been granted a ton of options at about the same price. (Call options give you the right to buy shares of stock at a fixed price for a fixed period of time. They make you money if the stock price goes up during the period.)

That puts $50 as a key benchmark for his performance over the next few years. He and Mantle Ridge have agreed not to sell their shares for at least three years, as long as he remains CEO. If he can get and hold the share price up to $75 or $80, that's a lot of gains. For all share owners.

Website seekingalpha has a short write up on the transaction.

Heard on friday hunter is getting rid off all the yard cabs used to haul crews around the yard and back and forth to the hotels. That should save the company a lot of money over the course of a year.

So how are crews to get to and from the hotels when they are away from their home terminal?

Maybe he is going to put the Asst. Trainmasters, Trainmasters, Asst. Superintendents, Superintendents,
Asst. Mgrs, Mgrs, to productive use.

I hope the TM's are fully licensed to drive the crew around and for that matter that they have a valid and clean driver's licence.

At BC Rail, after CN took over, management expected us to get into the taxi at the motel 15 minutes prior to going on duty and enjoy the 10 minute ride to the yard office on our own time. Not so, the Unions noted that we would not be covered by workers compensation etc in this scenario of being transported prior to being on duty. All crew dug in their heels and would not be in the taxi unless on duty.
A humorous story to this, management was trying to "catch crews" not being prepared and ready for the taxi 15 minutes early. I / we got our call and I was out for a smoke and spotted the Trainmaster sitting in his truck in a parking lot across form the motel. I alerted my Conductor that something was up and lets play the game. At the appropriate 15 minutes prior to call time we were both outside the motel pacing back and forth, looking at our watches. Eventually my conductor called the crew office and asked about or ride to the yard office. Eventually we got to the yard office 15 minutes after our "on duty time" and the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent and other Trainmaster started to threaten us with being late and not taking the taxi 15 minutes early. They all retreated when we told them that the crew office forgot to call the taxi. Doug

Maybe that will translate over to NS and for my crew buddies that will reduce the number of "Weed Weasels"

Don't know if it's the case for all of CSX but where I work, we're out front of the hotel 30 minutes before on-duty time. I don't believe it's contractual but it's a "gentleman's agreement" so we can stop to get food/provisions on the way to the yard.

I was expecting someone to report that Harrison now expects all crew members to walk, on their own personal time, to their on-duty location.

At the Willard Yard, yard taxis are being eliminated. So how do crews with their own personal bags get to the trains? Which can be miles away?

I heard the same thing today. But in the fourth post down, some of those management positions have already been eliminated, and that trainmasters will ferry crews around. Should be interesting in my area, where most supervision has small SUV's or cars and most crews huge pickups. Maybe he should let go some of his stallions and utility men can become conductor - cowboys. But the horse has to have an EOT, and where would you put that; and whose gonna do it?

Yes and management will probably be required to use their own cars, even though they will not be reimbursed for any damage they sustain (like a spike through a tire as happened to me).

drsilverstreak....I fear you will be right. And so many line lower management positions have already been eliminated I really would not want to be a CSX TM right now.........
