Forest Hills NY Rush Hour
Author: erielackawanna

Saw on the phone weather app that there was going to be sun in the morning so I got up early, before my meetings, and headed out to Forest Hills NY to try and get some diesels in sun. Unfortunately the sun was only there for my first five minutes or so (the sun rose into a dome of clouds and never came back). Still, got some shots I liked. The Long Island Railroad main through the City Zone is an amazing flurry of activity.

Image one - in my moments of sun, a set of M7s head towards the city on an express track.

Image two - another set of westbound M7s, this one on the local track.

Image three - literally as the sun vanishes, my first diesel arrives, but being paced by another set of M7s.

Image four - the westbound race heads toward the city.

Image five - now with the sun completely gone, I finally get a clean shot of a diesel-powered train.

Image six - eastbound M7s on the local track.

Images ten and eleven are of trains under the Pennsy-style position light signal bridge.

Image twelve is a set of westbound M3s.

Real position signals (PRR)... Must be the last place where those exist.

Other than that, great photos. I live down south now, but I grew up on LI, and remember riding that line many times.

A train zooming through about every 2 minutes on average.

I remember catching LIRR rare FL9s at on that very platform--only once, but once was enough! Even enlisted my wife (SWMBO) with another camera just in case. Good old Kodachrome came thru!

The PRR position light signals are still used in some other places as well.

The 2-light dwarf position signals are at Jamaica station.

With all three yellow lights?

Yes. LIRR does not have the color-position retrofit that Amtrak did.

We just last evening saw three vertical yellow lights lit on the signal west of the Rt. 93 crossing of the former PRR, east Dalton Ohio, further east of Wooster Ohio.

Of course I wanted to turn around and wait for the activity, but my passengers had already ran past their train attention spans.

NS has replaced many of these signals between Alliance and Crestline with single pale approach lit lights.

Thanks for these terrific images of a very busy, very interesting railroad that we get to see all too seldom here on TO. It's hard to beat for sheer density of traffic and marvelous urban vistas, both of which you captured very well indeed.

Every one of my few trips on the LIRR, or in proximity to it with an opportunity to see the action (however briefly), have been memorable experiences.

Which reminds me: now that I have family in the NYC area again, I've got to get back. Especially before the classic PRR position light signals disappear some day, as so many other classic signalling systems have elsewhere.

On the list as of right now. Thanks much.
