A pair of CSX GP38-2's around Town
Author: DTWilson

For the last month CSX has assigned a pair of GP38-2's to work the Local (Jobs B770 Daylight & B771 2nd. shift) out of the former WV Central / ex. WM yard at Beryl, WV. The bulk of the local's work is switching cars for the Verso paper mill across the river at Luke, MD and their large Finish Products Warehouse east of Westernport, MD.

The local also will travel to Keyser, WV to switch loads of plastic pellets for the Automated Packaging Facility in the Keyser Industrial Park.

With the elimination of thru freights on the Mountain Sub, the local is also tasked with handling the inbound and outbound traffic between Beryl and the CSX at Cumberland, MD. The routine has settled into the B771 crew taking the outbound traffic to Cumberland on 2nd. shift usually at 8:00 pm. and returning from Cumberland with the inbound traffic 6-7 hours later.

The pair of GP38-2's are both former Conrail units.

CSX #2748 - Built 2/1973 as Penn Central #8130, later CR #8130
CSX #2787 - Built 8/1978 as Conrail #8218

1-3) B770-19 returning westbound passing the Westernport Elementary School playground after working the Verso Finish Products Warehouse east of Westernport, MD. The white Dump Truck, Crosstie pile, and the sets of rail between the local and the fence are in the George's Creek Railway's small yard trackage in town.

2) Eastbound, track #2... B771-19 at Bull Neck Curve, east of Keyser, WV. The would return approx 7 hours later passing over the Defect Detector near my house with 36 cars of inbound traffic.

Nice photos and catches. Does the yard at Grafton do any switching now with no mixed freights?

I know this may have been posted before but the mixed freight that was re-routed... does it still go to St. Marys?
