With all of the changes in operations on CSXT, will NS follow suit? I know Debutts Yard in Chattanooga is now a flat switch yard, but will more NS humps be converted to a flat yard? Also, CSXT is eliminating helper jobs across the system. Will NS do the same? (Cannot imagine this working at Altoona). Would NS consider single tracking their route from North Jersey to Chicago if CSXT does this to the Water Level Route? How many trains does CSXT run between North Jersey and Chicago vs CSX? With CSXT doing these things to their system, it seems like NS will be in a good position to gain business as long as they do not pare down assets like CSXT. If they like the financial results achieved by CSX, the institutional investors and other large shareholders will demand the same from all the others. BNSF is a special case, but Berkshire Hathaway could demand a change-over to the "Precision Railroading" model if BNSF becomes an industry laggard in profitability. There's a reason why the old-time management gurus, Peter Drucker and W. Edwards Deming, warned (or railed against, in the case of the latter) the ability of large investors to demand short-term results at the expense of long-term viability of large companies, and we're seeing it in our industry. Deming's point of view, at least, was that these are the organizations many of us depend on for employment and goods/services, and preserving/growing them is essential for the good of the country. Date: 07/21/17 20:46 Re: NS vs CSXT Operations Question Author: JLinDE I think NS management is smart and they will not mimic what CSX is doing now, altho it has been pointed out to me they are making some consolidations too. Remember, most of the business in New Jersey is on Conrail Shared Assets, and some in Detroit. Both railroads can bid on it and do, and it is a lot of traffic. And of course much of it is de-regulated, much boxcar and intermodal. Since EHH changes I've noticed a drop in train count and train size on the Philly sub, but part of that is just the July doldrums. Traffic will pick up toward late August and Sept. That is the way it has been for years. Neither CSX or NS could survive single-tracking their lines across NY and PA. NY would never allow it due to the passenger trains. Train counts? These are low on slow days. Albany area west on CSX across NY 32/day plus AMTK. West of Bflo a few more. this is fast RR; you need a lot of track space. NS across central PA, Probably 40 or more. With the grades Altoona to Pgh you need what they have now, but the Conemaugh line will be a debate forever. CSX's Sandpatch line is also critical, about 24 freights on slow days.
Eliminate helpers? It has been tried. When PC hired ex-SOU high guy Bill Moore he tried to eliminate the helpers both sides of Gallitzin by putting all the locos on front. At least one string-line derailment and constipating the railroad ended that soon. Modern Locos have made helpers less necessary on many grades but in many cases where RR's do not use DPU's they offer better train handling. Most runs on CSX and NS are too short for efficient use of DPU's, but both RR's have tried them. And probably will be down to 20 on CSX before EHH and his minions are through with them!!! I remember back in 2004 or 2005 it was about 60 trains a day!! The NS line, atleast between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg still has about 50-60 trains in 24 hours.. Maybe slightly more on a good day. Posted from Android |
