MGA Waynesburg Southern Branch Part 2
Author: jmbreitigan

Part 2 is the follow-up to Part 1 ( https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,4342506 ) of coverage of the southern end of the Waynesburg Southern Branch. I hope you find it as interesting as Part 1.

1. This is a photo I forgot to put in Part 1. Here we are looking at the south end of Federal #2 mine. 4-28-17

2 & 3. Now we are at the other end of Federal #2 mine as N77 is loading at Federal #2 mine. 6-2-17

4. Caterpillar D-10 moving coal as the last hoppers of N77 approach the load-out at Federal #2 mine. 6-2-17

5. N77 with CSXT #522 & 741 head North with 77 hoppers, loaded at Federal #2 mine. Probably destined for the Mount Storm power plant in WV. 6-2-17

June 27th was probably the most interesting day at least for us as we arrived bright and early on a real nice day. On this day I took the most pictures of all our visits to Federal #2. When we arrived a NS train had just arrived and this morning we decided to follow Miracle Run road as far as we could looking for openings through the trees for pictures of the train. In all of our prior visits we never did check out how far and where this road did go. So this morning we wound up at the Simon Haught road crossing just about at the end of the Miracle Run Branch. Haught was a name we saw on a few headstones in that hilltop cemetery I mentioned in Part 1 but there are a few pictures in this Part 2 as well. For instance you can see it in photo #5. The Haught name is still around as that was the name told to me when I asked who owned the area surrounding that hilltop cemetery. So here we go:

6. N01 with NS #8173,6789 & 2538 stop near MP 6 after pulling 130 empty hoppers past the loadout at Federal #2 mine. The power will then cut off the train and then head back on the runner track (on the left) to the load-out. 6-27-17

7. N01 from the over side of the road crossing. 6-27-17

8. N01 power after cutting off the empty train, head back to the loadout via the runner track. 6-27-17

9. End of the Miracle Run Branch.

10. I was hoping to get all three locomotives and I almost succeeded. Notice that all 3 are elephant style which had to be addressed before hooking onto the other end of the train. 6-27-17

11. Power for N01 is almost at the end of the running track near the Federal #2 loadout . But there is a slight problem, the power is not right to lead the train out of the mine. So N01 power has to go to the wye at CP CLIF (a few miles North) to turn the power so #8173 will lead leaving the mine. 6-27-17

12. This provided me an opportunity to take some pictures at some locations I had in mind. How could we pass up a EMD longhood forward in nice light. Here we are at CP BULA as N01 power with NS #2538 on the way to the wye at CP CLIF to turn the power and then head back to the mine.

Note: a loaded 130 car train will put the front of the train right where #2538 is, blocking two roads. Flashing red lights on Miracle Run road ( to the left and out of the frame ) alert the locals and they will cross here and follow the track to access the other side of both blocked roads. 6-27-17

13. N01 power at MP 1 headed to the wye at CP CLIF to switch the locomotives and then head back to Federal #2 mine. 6-27-17

14. N01 power at the Cliff road crossing approaching the south end of the wye just to the right. A grab shot as I was stuck behind traffic and just had time to snap this. 6-27-17

15. N01 power has reversed on the north end of the wye at CP CLIF and is now headed to the other end of the wye that used to go to blacksville #1 mine. That track is no longer in use. I am at the south end of the wye in WV and the N01 power is across the state line in PA. 6-27-17

16. N01 power headed towards old Blacksville #1 mine on the wye at CP CLIF. N01 power is still in PA. while I am in WV. 6-27-17

17. N01 power is now reversed and as soon as the conductor attends to the switch at the south end of the wye at CP CLIF, the power will head back to Federal #2 mine. 6-27-17

18. All switches back to normal at the wye at CP CLIF, N01 power has just crossed Cliff road and is headed back to Federal #2 mine. 6-27-17

More to come.................

19. N01 power headed back to Federal #2 mine after reversing at the wye at CP CLIF. That is a 1953 Ford tractor in the foreground and a McCormick 4WD tractor behind it. 6-27-17

20. D10 working the coal pile at Federal #2 mine while we wait for N01 to load. 6-27-17

21. N01 power is now coupled to the empty train and heads towards the loadout out of view to the right of the white load-out. 6-27-17

More to come............

22. This is the shot I have waited so long to get from the top of this hill. Late afternoon light is what you had to have and finally it happened. N01 with NS #8173,6789 & 2538 head North with 130 hoppers, loaded at Federal #2 mine. The person that owns the property around this hilltop lives in the white house in the distance. 6-27-17

23. Here is a picture of that 1953 Ford tractor at work while we waited for N01 to finish loading. We talked to the man and he said that tractor runs like a fine watch. A tip of the hat to people that work the hillsides in WV.

24. CSX #3265 & 3454 head North with 80 cars loaded at Federal #2 mine. I could not pass tis up with those hay bales on the hillside. 6-29-17

Well I hope you enjoyed the visit.

Regards,

John M Breitigan

Superb job John. Thanks for sharing your great work of such a remote location on the railroad. Folks may be interested in knowing that the end of the Miracle Run Branch is just a few miles from the end of the Loveridge Branch to the south - yet trains take two distinctly different routes to access the mines at the end of each.

Thanks all.

bigkidpgh, interesting observation on your part about Loveridge being a few miles south of Federal #2 mine.
