NS GP38-2 funeral train from Roanoke to Linwood
Author: SOU3921

Caught NS 968 with 8343 leading 17 GP38-2 and 5 excursion cars heading south to Linwood this morning. Original crew lawed out at Whittles, VA, so a daylight viewing was possible.

First at Pelham, NC.

2 at Reidsville, NC.

Lots of other goodies out this morning. It appeared to be UP day on the NS Piedmont Division.

NS158 at the s-curve in Reidsville, NC.

NS214 passing NS158 at Shelton, NC.

NS290 at the s-curve in Reidsville, NC.

Friendly crew on 18M, running for the law, behind NS968.

NS213 with UP4207 following 18M both at Reidsville.

Finally, a video of NS968 with a nice Leslie S3L on the ex-Conrail.

Does anyone know if the car "Mississippi", that appears to be a coach, is of Great Northern Heritage? It looks like it might be.

I don't know much about passenger cars, but based on the window alignment, it looks like all five cars in this train are the exact same type/design.

Also, I haven't heard which numbers yet, but four or five of those GP38's are headed to the W&LE.

Those will fit in with the HH GP35's that are on roster. Are the passenger cars going to NCTM?

These five cars were built for the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1950 or so, then were rebuilt for Pittsburgh's PATrain commuter service in the 1970s/1980s, then went to Connecticut DOT for its passenger services.

Holland America/Princess Tours,(2) Adirondack Scenic,(2) and NCTM (1) were the winning bidders. Winning bids ranged from $160,000 to $275,00

I'm not familiar with the area, where is Shelton in relation to Roanoke or Memphis?  Thanks for the pics, wish they had closed up the vestibule.

Shelton is right at the NC/VA line, south of Danville, VA.

So this funeral train goes to Memphis where it is parceled out to where ever and interchanged. How long does it take to get to Memphis

I believe it was terminated in Linwood and being dispersed from there.
