NS Locomotive Auction 2017 Buyers List
Author: NSDash9

On August 17, 2017, Norfolk Southern sold 62 of its EMD GP38-2 locomotives via an auction at Roanoke, Virginia conducted by Blackmon Auctions. I have posted a list of the locomotives sold with buyer information on my website here:

Thanks for the list.

Looks like the North Shore (PA) and Reading Blue Mountain & Northern (PA) are adding power to their rosters.

I wonder if the RBM&N will bump some of their EMD switchers, or if this is a roster expansion?

This is a big year for the North Shore Group. Railway Age named them Short Line of the Year. NS named them Short Line of the Year. And, the American Short Line and Regional Rail association gave them a 2017 Marketing award.

We'll get to see at least one out West, Frontier bought one, most likely for the White Swan WA line.

How many of the auctioned units had admiral cabs? Sort of surprised NS got rid of any of these...

Thanks Chris,
appreciate you posting this , I was shocked at how cheap some of these sold for. As for the two that went to Respondek RR , the # 5255 is headed to our Indiana Eastern operation at Cottage Grove , IN for service. While ex NS # 5161 is headed to temporary storage in southern Indiana til we need her on one of our operations or for future operations.

3 had admiral cabs. I have a feeling that the bean counters in Atlanta didn't realize it when this happened.

Maybe not. Remember, Frontier owns CCET, former NS/NW Peavine heading east out of Cincinnati.

I remember seeing the auction site shortly after the auction, and if I recall correctly, prices ranged roughly around $80,000 to $230,000.

The "cheap" units have issues for sure at that price...

Prices for the Admiral cab units was truly breathtaking. One had a fire in the long hood, another had no traction motors, and the third had issues producing power.

Still think it's odd that NS got rid of so many 4-axle units. I thought there was even more of a need for these than before. I guess the lower horsepower 6 axle units are just as good for switching and the needs of the RR.
