Eastern Railroad Discussion > Color in the Southern Realm; Heritage, and lahsup of the year?Date: 09/24/17 19:08 Color in the Southern Realm; Heritage, and lahsup of the year? Author: Railfan94 Thursday, September 21st was indeed a very good day on Norfolk Southern in Virginia. From foreign leaders, a heritage unit, and what I think will qualify as the lashup of the year here in VA!
We start in Broadway yard in Petersburg, and Hopewell local V11 has a nice colorful trio. SD70ACe #1069, the Virginian heritage is leading the way, with a UP SD70M second, and an SD60E third. After that, I headed a bit west in hopes of getting a little nose light for my incoming westbounds. First up though was NS 820 with a pair of re-builds; AC44C6M leading an SD60E. With what had to be 200 cars, empty grain train 41N features CSX SD70AC #4543 leading an ES44DC. Rounding out a 5 train morning was hopper train 813 with an Ex Conrail D8-40CW and D9-44CW. It's just after 13:00, and V11 is headed back west to Crewe sans SD60E. Date: 09/24/17 19:14 Re: Color in the Southern Realm; Heritage, and lahsup of the year Author: Railfan94 Traffic was relatively slow on CSX due to trains in emergency around Baltimore. Q415 was unaffected though, and headed south with a nice mix of EMD's trailing the lead two GEVO's.
With NS 236 running with a hell of a quartet, and daylight running out, I decided to head west and get daylight on him. While on the way, I shot 234 with a UP Tier 4 leader at Sutherland. I went just over an hour to the west, and landed at Abilene. No sooner had I turned the car off, I heard 236 calling signals 4 miles out. Seen here rounding the bend just east of the CP at Abilene, SD90MAC #7333 leads D9-40C #8790, CSX CW44AH #5113, and UP SD70M #5164. With a 10mph speed restriction around Green Bay, the sun set before the train got here. This is the B3.0, located 3 miles west of Burkeville, VA. Here's my "I Tried" shot for the day. 1/5 second pan shot as 236 departs Crewe in the last moments of daylight.
