Eastern Railroad Discussion > DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PADate: 09/24/17 20:19 DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: sscannella Saturday 9/23 I had the opportunity to photograph the Delaware Lackawanna SC7 job to Carbondale, PA moving loaded sand and empty hoppers to / from the transload facility at the site of the former D&H Carbondale yard. The fracking sand business has really been booming this year for the DL. Normally the sand is interchanged from NS via Allentown then the H74/H76 locals to Portland PA where the DL's PT97/98 jobs interchange and forward the sand to Scranton. But last Saturday (9/16) NS delivered a 105 car unit sand train to the DL via Harrisburg then Sunbury and the Buffalo Line and Sunbury Sub to Scranton. DL has been busy all week shuffling loads and empties up and down the Lackawanna Valley and the former D&H line to Carbondale.
I intercepted Saturday morning's train in Archbald with the DL corporate-painted C424 2403 leading the sister road Depew Lancaster & Western RS11 1804 and CNJ painted RS3 1554 with 15 loads. The second view here is from under the Meredith St overpass just south of Carbondale. The crew cut the power away from the loads on the siding south of the city and ran light to start switching the distribution facility. They are seen here just after crossing the Lackawanna River and approaching the Rt 6 grade crossing. As they would be at the facility for an hour or so, and it's not conducive to photography without major trespassing, I opted at this point to return to my parents house 10 miles south just outside of Scranton to give my wife her car back (she had relatives to visit) and grab my mother's vehicle for the rest of the day. Date: 09/24/17 20:26 Re: DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: sscannella I returned to Carbondale in plenty of time to catch the leisurely southbound return to Scranton, starting again at the Rt.6 crossing in Carbondale, with the RS3 now in the lead and 21 empties in tow.
Now I should have been able to get to the signature location in Carbondale, the Meredith St overpass to the south of the town, but I must have been driving like an 80-year old lady in my borrowed mother's car and just missed them by seconds. Then it was off to Archbald again to catch them there. The train stopped just to the south of this location where there is a short siding to let a Steamtown operated wine-tasting train with DL'2 2457 in charge head to Carbondale for a scheduled 2:00 pm departure. Two trains on the Carbondale line on the same day, unheard of just a few short years ago. Date: 09/24/17 20:30 Re: DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: sscannella Next it was off to the town of Olyphant, where I got these two vies as the train was crossing Lackawanna Ave and approaching another crossing of the Lackawanna River. The station to the left is one of several erected by Lackawanna to support occasional Steamtown passenger trains on the Line up through the valley.
The footbridge at the south end of the former D&H Green Ridge Yard was my next stop. The crew cut the power away to pickup another 32 empties stored on the siding there to add on to the 21 coming south. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/24/17 20:32 by sscannella. Date: 09/24/17 20:43 Re: DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: sscannella When the crew started to pull the additional cars and double them onto the southbound train, I decided to move on to my next location.
Since the sand is usually interchanged with NS at Portland or Slateford 60 miles or so to the east via DL's former DL&W Pocono Main, I assumed that they would be pulling into Scranton Yard (Steamtown's yard) from the former D&H line via the Strawberry Hill connector. So me and several other photographers set up in that area. We were surprised when we heard horns blowing at the crossings to the north of us, but no train showing up. What we learned a short time later was the crew split the power, and headed to South Scranton, where they would shove the cars down toward the interchange with the NS just south of the NS's former DL&W / D&H / CP Taylor Yard, where they were building an outbound empty unit train to be picked up by NS later. One final pic posted here is from the morning at the Steamtown / Scranton Yard by Bridge 60 tower, DL's RS32 211 and C425 2457. The 2457 was borrowed for the wine train mentioned earlier, with the 211 was just returned to service after an overhaul following about 4-5 years of being out-of-service. Word from DL / GVT management is to expect to see her sometime in the not-to-distant future in their corporate paint scheme. I have been seeing also a lot of feed, (my guess), being moved recently by via NS 16N. Was wondering where that is going..?? Date: 09/25/17 06:21 Re: DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: sscannella ns1000 Wrote:

Was wondering > where that is going..?? 16N usually has the grain for the mills at Mt. Pocono and Martin's Creek. The Mt. Pocono cars go through Allentown to the H74/H76 local to Portland where DL picks them up and moves to the mill. Date: 09/25/17 06:35 Re: DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: PRR1361 NS is moving the frac sand to the DL, coming from the Midwest. The REALLY good news here is that drilling is set to re-start in the Tunkhannock area. GO FRACKERS!

The REALLY good news here is that > drilling is set to re-start in the Tunkhannock > area. GO FRACKERS! There's an enormous amount of work in the planning / permitting stage for drillers right now. Gas, mostly. There are as many as 20 pipelines in the design or construction stage. FERC has approved three in the past two months, now that it has a quota of members WONK ALERT Forbes has a summary of the pipeline issue, and how it is creating an incredible amount of work for US construction crews. https://www.forbes.com/sites/judeclemente/2017/06/25/the-northeast-natural-gas-pipeline-buildout-is-coming/#325ca03e7f74 Date: 09/25/17 09:32 Re: DL Alcos moving sand to Carbondale, PA Author: cjvrr Great photos.
