Status of CSX Barr, Willard and North Baltimore Yards
Author: Northern

What is the status of CSX's Barr Yard, Willard Yard and North Baltimore Yard? If they are still open, what functions do each do as part of the system today?

All three yards are still active, although trains no longer originate / terminate at North Baltimore.

These are the trains that originate / terminate at Barr:

Q368 Chicago, IL - Willard, OH
Q643 Chicago, IL - Cincinnati, OH
Q644 Cincinnati, OH - Chicago, IL
Q645 Chicago, IL - Waycross, GA
Q646 Waycross, GA - Chicago, IL
Plus, a few others pick up / set out there.

These are the trains that originate / terminate at Willard:

Q342 Cincinnati, OH - Willard, OH
Q365 Willard, OH - Cincinnati, OH
Q368 Chicago, IL - Willard, OH
Q510 Willard, OH - Detroit, MI
Q511 Detroit, MI - Willard, OH
Plus, a good handful swap blocks there.

Again, North Baltimore is pretty much just a block swap location; no trains originate / terminate there.

I drove by North Baltimore today. Five of the seven cranes appeared to be in use, with Nos. 6 and 7 parked next to each other at the east end. There were many fewer containers near the tracks and the yard tracks were emptier than they were a month earlier, but the front gate was still open and during the span of about 10 minutes I must have seen close to a dozen trucks go in or out.

Along with intermodal equipment, there were a couple of short cuts of traditional freight cars visible in the yard. I've never seen that before.

Folkston sees quite a few of Waycross trains, but Waycross has a lot of manifest traffic that doesn’t run through Folkston. Folkston sees an average of 46 trains (40 CSX and 6 Amtrak) in a 24-hour period.

From what I know of Waycross and see on Google earth all of the trains mentioned may go 'by' the town of Waycross but not the big hump yard. It is actually located west of the interlockings downtown and stretches for a few miles southwest along the secondary line to Montgomery. Most intermodal, multilevel and thru trains do not run past the yard. And almost all of the carload trains go in and out of the east end. I also think there are two routes thru town so I do not know if you can sit in one place and see all the trains mentioned. Other than the long distance Waycross to Montgomery local do any of the other thru freight trains use the old 'South Wind' route to Montgomery? If not, would that line be a sales candidate? I've never been down there; but I suspect there is a fair amount of local business on it.

Just to expound... Rice Yard is located on the Thomasville Sub, which is indeed the secondary route that runs to Montgomery, AL. Out of Waycross, the only traffic is are locals A723, A724, and Q282. Although they are locals, A723 and A724 usually run well over 100 cars. These locals run daily and they work all intermediate points between Waycross and Montgomery. So there’s still a lot of online business on the Bowline. Also, Q282 runs this route 3-4 times a week. This train will work the Hyundai assembly plant just south of Montgomery.

Rice Yard is nearly like a stub ended yard. Other than the three trains previously mentioned, all manifest and local trains enter and exit Rice Yard’s (timetable) south end. All intermodal, autorack (save Q282), and unit trains completely avoid the yard.

The routes out of town are as follows:

• Jesup Sub: this Sub runs from Folkston, enters Waycross from the southeast, turns northeast at the diamonds and then runs towards Jesup. The Waycross - Folkston segment of the Jesup Sub is the busiest line into Waycross with an average of 33 trains a day. The Waycross - Jesup segment sees an average of 13 trains a day.

•Fitzgerald Sub: this Sub runs northwest out of Waycross towards Manchester. This is the second busiest line out of Waycross with an average of 30 trains a day.

•Thomasville Sub: as mentioned above, this Sub runs southwest out of Waycross towards Thomasville and Montgomery. It sees only 2-3 trains a day.

•Brunswick Sub: this Sub splits off the Jesup Sub a little ways north of the diamonds and heads east towards Brunswick. This line sees very little traffic, just the A774 local turn and sporadic grain trains.

•Pearson Spur: this is the remnant of the line to Albany, GA. It’s now abandoned west of Pearson. This line only sees yard jobs to the Waycross Industrial Park and storage.

All trains, except for the Thomasville Sub locals, can be seen at the diamonds.

Thanks Florida 581 for you detailed update. After I typed it, and being weak on geography in the area, I thought I'd better check to see if the Thomasville Sub is CSX's connection to the Chattahoochee Industrial RR which serves one or more major paper/cardboard producing plants. It was pointed out to me by a friend who works for a shortline in New Jersey that they have a receiver that gets boxcars of product from the CIRR. Indeed, we see boxcars with CIRR marks and others with them. So when I checked that connection I realize the Thomasville Sub had a good traffic base. Given that, and that local biz is important, my next would be why does not CSX favor the Thomasville Sub for carload trains to relieve the Fitzgerald of a few trains, making that the primary higher speed intermodal/ multilevelroute between Florida and the Midwest and let the Thomasville serve the manifest business? My CSX's TT's are 18 years old now and may not give current signal systems, speeds, and siding lengths. Is not the Fitzgerald at least half single track Waycross to Manchester? 30 trains a day is a lot for a single track CTC line even with long sidings, and I do not think that line is flat and straight as many might think.
