Got a text that NS 173 was headed south from Greeneville, SC with three of the recently short-term leased ex BN SD70MAC's in tow. I headed trackside around lunch time and milled around the depot in Gainesville. While I was waiting there were a couple of engines sitting ready for service on the Gainesville Midland (CSX) interchange track out front of Reddy Ice, including a recently re-built AC44C6M.

Image #1 & #2 - NS #4057 AC44C6M faces south. This unit is formerly NS C40-9 #8791, and was re-built in Juniata.

Image #3 - NS #173 heads south past the NS' Gainesville depot, which also serves Amtrak.

One more set to come.

I shot these too close to the track, as I was concerned about trucks leaving Reddy Ice blocking my view, as I have been burned before a time or two. While I was hoping to shoot some freight cars as well on NS #173, I didn't get much of a chance, as there were 4 locomotives and 8 cars total.

Will the former BNSF units have cab signals added even though they are on lease?

I do not know what if any upgrades NS will place on these units. Maybe Chris Toth can provide some insight.

They will not have cab signals added. They are just leasers at this point, to be used while Progress Rail is rebuilding 50 NS SD70's.

Saw the same 4 unit set parked, heading east towards Roanoke, on the NS mainline at Elliston on 1/6 at 7:30am

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE FORMER NYS&W UNITS ARE IN THE REBUILD PROGRAM

No not yet the program is only for the standard cab SD70’s
