NS H76 & Delaware Lackawanna last Saturday
Author: OCtrainguy

With my son home for his winter break, we made plans to photo the Delaware Lackawanna PT 97/98 train on January 6th. As many have said before, you can plan your trip, pick the dates, but Mother Nature holds the final card. While we had sunny skies, the temperature was slightly above zero with a stiff wind pushing the wind chill under zero. Nonetheless, we made the most of it and overall stayed warm. Coming from Jersey shore, we wanted to catch the NS H76, which runs from Allentown and interchanges with the DL, and does some other work along the way. The H76 got through Phillispburg before we did as he was already working Hudson Yard. So we went a bit north and photographed the H76 leaving Hudson Yard and began our photographs from there.

1. The H76 with SD40-2s 3381 & 3337 (No complaints from me on that set!)
2. We said goodbye to the H76 for a bit as they headed to Martins Creek and we headed up to Portland. After checking out the frozen Delaware River, we caught up with the H76 as they were working the yard in Portland.
3. The H76 ended up taking their cars down by the power plant and tied them down there as seen in this photo.

Continuing the photos.

4. A NS scale car (right?) on the H76
5. From the pedestrian bridge in Portland, I got this photo looking up river on the Delaware River and the DL&W bridge over the river

The H76 had left Portland at that point and was heading back toward Martins Creek/Allentown, we weren't sure. We later found out they went back to Martins Creek for another cut of cars for the DL. But at that point, we were looking for the DL.

6. Looking at the yard in Slateford Junction.

A few more to follow..

Last of the photos...

We were heading west out of the water gap when the DL came in east.

7. The DL doing a break check in Slateford Junction. They would take the 20 grain cars to the right of the power out of the yard.
8. After leaving the water gap woth the 20 grain cars plus a 2 bay covered hopper, the DL makes a run through East Stroudsburg with four engines up front
9. And four engines on the rear

The DL made real good time through East Stroudsburg, we never caught back up with them. Not really sure of what they were doing or where they were, we lost them. We headed up to Cresco without any luck. We later learned they went to Gravel Place with those cars and then headed back to Portland to get the cars the H76 left for them. A learning curve for this trip and something to keep in mind for future ones.

A video to share from last Saturday...

1. The Delaware Lackawanna making good time and speed through East Stroudsburg

We weren't as successful as we would've liked, but still enjoyed ourselves. We spent the night in Scranton and saw the DL train arrive around 7:30 p.m. On Sunday morning, the train was idling by Steamtown. Hope you enjoy.
