CSX Coal & Crude along the Lake Shore
Author: train1275

I suspect these cars are still associated with the Kintigh Generating Station in Somerset, NY located on the Somerset Railroad. Kintigh is a 675MW coal fired plant that opened in 1984 with a new 15.59 mile railroad built on both old rights of way and new alignment. It was operated by Conrail when opened and later CSX. There were / are 428 cars in the fleet.

Anyway it seems rare to see a coal train anymore in this territory.

Photos taken on CSX - former Conrail / NYC RR west of Buffalo at Westfield, NY as the train was westbound on February 18, 2018.

Didn't Somerset Railway have an impressive new bridge in its construction?

The day before on Saturday February 17, 2018 the UP 3890 comes east at Rogerville Road near Westfield, NY with a crude (since identified below as ethanol - oh well as related to the thread title) train.

Yes north of Lockport but I am not sure the dimensions. It was used in many publicity photos.

Saw that same tank train in Lyons, NY... Had 1987 placards, indicating ethanol, but sadly I never heard a symbol... Nice set of shots in this and your previous thread... #jealous!

I actually saw that train as well in Batavia. It was a very slow day on CSX. One of two lead by a UP SD70M.

This is a very general guideline, due to the common end terminals in the East. Ethanol trains (UN code 1987) are usually 80 cars plus buffers, crude oil 100 cars or more plus buffers (UN codes 1967/1968). This may not apply to trains from the Mid-west to the Southeast, or West.

Are there any/many crude oil trains running on the CSX Water Level route through New York State currently?
